Hunter 40.5

Well here it is. Nikki liked it, so that's what we got. For a bit more money we could have had a much newer boat in the BVI but Nikki did not want the hassle and did not like charter layouts. Being in CA means everything will be easier and the trip less rushed.

Yes I have read pretty much every comment bad and good about hunters on the internet and believe this boat will be fine for our pacific crossing. So for the bashers, I have already heard it.

We will be having dinner with a guy in Brisbane soon who done exactly this trip on the exact same model 2 years ago. He was very happy with his boat.

We will have new rig, new sails, life raft etc etc. This boat does not have a backstayless rig. The boat has a lot of good gear already like 12V diesel gen set, solar, radar, large fridge freezer, non charter layout with queen bed.

The insane tender will be sold for a decent sum and we will get a smaller one.

Beautiful boat. I lusted after a 40 Hunter in CA before I bought my Hunter 37.5. The 40' Hunter is a great design, with a terrific layout down below. My 37.5 sails great. Folks badmouth the Hunter, but they're sailed all over the World. Congrats and best of luck.

I really think its a nice looking boat. I pretty much dismissed hunters when I was in the US and did not ask to look at any. I think some of the newer versions are not the nicest in appearance. But we had to walk straight past some hunters on the way to other boats of interest so we had a look anyway. Many older versions look great particularly the 40.5 IMO.

Only minor things in the survey for which we were compensated. Moisture readings were all fine.

Hi I'm planing on going to the States in July 2013 to buy. I have been looking at Hunters. I have bareboat chartered a hunter 38 and really liked it. I was thinking of a 45ft but not sure yet. How have you found dealing with brokers over in the states, any recommendation. I am going to Florida next July for a bit of a holiday and to suss out the boats available

Also I was wondering about the price they advertise, is there much that you can negotiate downwards with them are they open to offers?

Can we please keep questions regarding price and brokers etc to PM. This thread is is just about the boat. All I will say is that it is a major headache closing a deal like this particularly if you want insurance right away. Also all prices are negotiable, some more than others. Start low and you will soon reach the sellers bottom dollar. Cheers

I'm glad that the long search has ended for you. She looks like a well tended vessel, and I'm sure she is competent to do the trip home for you.

When do you anticipate departing?

As to sail pricing -- there seems to be a wide range of quality in offshore-built sails, and some detailed investigation might be in order for you. Also, a PM to Island Planet (here on CF) might well be worth your while. I have followed his writings here, and his advice has seemed pretty unbiased and right on the money IMO.

We're heading back to Oz in a week (yay) and I liik forward to seeing you there sometime in the future... so good sailing and enjoy yourselves.

We will head to CA again in the second week of Feb, then depart when we have finished setting up the boat. I hope 2 weeks. But you know that could take longer. I would like to go earlier but it is impossible due to Nikki's job.

Dennis, we don't really have a home port in Oz. We tend to keep moving, not very fast usually, but not settling in any one spot (except for major projects or medical issues). Usually go offshore in the winter, often south to Tassie in the summer. Insatiable II is on Lake Macquarie now, hope to be headed south by January at the latest.

If you meant in the States, we sailed in the San Francisco Bay for years before departing in '86.
