Hull Speed when Heeling ?

I was looking at photos of various sailboat and wondered how terminal hull speed was calculated...its clear that some boats with a short water ligne gain a foot or more when on an angle...my boat in particular seems to have a longer water ligne when healing...whould this mean a faster speed?

the hull speed formula (square root x waterline length X 1.34) is at best approx.
narrow boats will go slightly faster, wider boats slower.
It is just a rough quide and thats all.

Trawlers can usually make hull speed regardless of the winds.

If I understand it right long overhangs were the most effective response to the old CCA design rule that favored a shorter waterline legnth.
Better standing for a boat with a shorter waterline length, a boat that when heeled over could lengthen dramatically, adding to it's hull speed. Bill Tripp worked that angle very successfully. Makes for a very pretty boat as well.

Angle of heel should be considered (along with ballast weight, displacement) a hull design element. After a certain degree of heel speed is lost. Different boats have different (slightly?) sweet spots this way. Sailing will tell where your is. I think on my Challenger I started losing efficiency/speed after 20 degrees or so. On our old LeCompte it was a bit deeper.
This is why some folks invest in a clinometer.

And if you want to find your maximum LWL under sail, just record your speed through the water and work the formula backwards...

Danny is almost always at sea...he voyages all over malaysia and indonesia to collect animals for the pet trade...this time of year hes probably in the salomons??

How efffective overhangs are on adding to sailing length depends upon the shape of the overhang.
