Having said that, Captain Fatty rebuilt one from a hurricane wreck and sailed it around the world. He's going around again right now.

As for the Atomic 4, it's a wonderful old gasoline engine. But I, and many many others here, don't think a gasoline engine belongs on a cruising boat. Besides the dangers of lots of gasoline on the boat, they use too much fuel and have an actual electrical system, always a sore point in salt water conditions.

All of the above advice is free, and you know what they say about getting something for nothing....
He might be going around again but he no longer is sailing the 38 as he sold it some time ago.
The Atomic bomb is a good old gas engine that most people can work on but most folks would be happier with a diesel.

Check out my website:
hughes38.com – Hughes 38 Owners Group

Started out as a H38 site, now morphing into more of a general resource for boating website.

Re: Hughes 38 - Would You Trust it Offshore ?

A thread come back to life! I was the friend Bill mentioned early on in the thread some 5 years ago. I had a Hughes 38 for 18 years and put 30K nm under the keel. GREAT sea boat. I eventually replaced the atomic 4 but it made it from Maine to Tortola and back to the Chesapeake. Beautiful boat and easy to sail; same hull design as the Hinckley 38 SW... classic plastic
