Re: How to buy a sailboat?

I'll keep this short, though I could make it into a much longer and entertaining story.

There was a B50 for sale locally at a great price. We fell in love with the photos on the internet- it was beautiful! But when we went up to see it, it was obviously absolutely abused and beat. I told the dealer I *might* offer him $40k and even then I'd have to think long and hard on it.

Even going back later and reviewing the online photos I asked how something that was in such terrible condition could look so gorgeous in photos.

If only that was an isolated case. Tends to be the rule, not the exception. Like waking up in the morning with some leathery alligator you dragged home from the party. Looked good under dim lights, not so under sunlight.

I can't blame them. I get a kick out of the pics with the plates, place mats, wine glasses, silverware and a bottle of wine. Good salesmanship by a broker, looking for a chump.

Re: How to buy a sailboat?

I would like to thank everyone who gave me a good advice. After a lengthy discussion with the owner my understanding is that the boat needs new sails, all electronics, new anchor chain and some small stuff. So, at very least $30K of immediate investment, possibly $40K. That puts it out of my budget. So I have decided to pass (unless the owner decides to sell it for $20K . Back to chartering...

Re: How to buy a sailboat?

I bought my first sailboat this summer, all alone, I can tell you a couple of things.

I read many books, youtube videos, podcasts, ... you name it.

Well, nothing could really prepare me to all the possible variant, problems thing that are on a sailboat. If you are asking this question the only answer is: Find someone that owned that kind of boat and bring him with you + pay for a surveyor and then ask online.
