How do the Cheoy Lee 48 Ketch sail?

I wonder how the sailing compares to say a Amel 48,53, 54 etc?

I think Cheoy Lee built a number of different 48 Ft. Ketches, including those designed by:
Bob Perry
Bill Luders (“Clipper”)
Britton Chance (“Golden Wave”)

None of which would compare favourably with a Henri Amel / J. Carteau designed boat, built by Amel.

Hey, Gord, I resemble that remark :-))

I have a Golden Wave 42, designed by Bob Perry and built by Golden Wave Shipyards in Hong Kong (AKA Cheoy Lee). In the 80's, Cheoy Lee launched a series of boats under the "Golden Wave" name, designed to compete with Swans.

My GW42 (PHRF 99) will run circles around the Amels (PHRF 115-150). So will the larger Chance-designed Golden Wave 48.

The Amels are wonderful boats for voyaging...innovative designs, well built, very strong, etc. But, they're not very fast.

JMO,

Bill

Point taken, Bill.

I should not have extrapolated my aversion for numerous Asian boats (including Cheoy Lees) I’ve worked on, to the general.

I found a few Golden Waves for sale

They are pretty condition.
Im looking for something big and between $150 to $250,000.
Would like to get up around 48 to 55ft. Maybe not to much
draft around 4.5 to 5.
Ive been looking at some Wellingtons,Morgan 51,Gulfstars, Cheoy Lee,
Vagabonds. I don't need alot of speed. I want lots of room for my dogs,
ham radio equipment, girl friends here and there. Holds lots of frech water
and have a watermaker, washer dryer, air conditiong system thru out.
Big freezer and Refridg. Large generator maybe some solar panels.
Would like it to point pretty good if possible.

Will you be attempting to single hand a 48 to 55 ft boat when various girlfriends are not about?

Given your question I just have to ask.

What's your sailing background?

What's your plan for this boat?

you can fit a lot of girl friends in a 54' boat

I'm going to get flamed for this....look at a Hunter 54. I think it's undervalued in the current market.
