Highly competitive 25'-30' Sloop?

It probably would be helpful for you to take a look at the PHRF ratings for the boats you think you might like. While you have to sail with the PHRF rating as a handicap, the lower rated boats are faster, and probably more fun to sail. As you are on a lake, the PHRF ratings for Long Island Sound or the Chesapeake are probably more appropriate that those for the windier San Francisco Bay.

In the 27 foot range, a PHRF of about 175 -200 might be what you are looking for--faster than most of the boats with weekender accomodations, but an older design with a low price.

I've kind of been looking for a similar boat only for ocean sailing and what I've seen for biggest bang for the buck in your size range is the Express 27.
It's an ultralight, on the west coast they're even involved in shorthanded races out to Hawaii. There's an active fleet in the Detroit area. Ckeck out thier website.

There are a number of others, but the prices get steep(Melges or Antrim 27).

They do look interesting, So does the Pearson Flyer; and the Sabre. My losses over the last 6 Months are hard to ignore and I'm feeling pretty poor. Really looking for something with some imperfections (Sound hull, chain plates, rigging, engine - nearly anything goes on interior) that can be had for under $5000. ... Which is a tall order I suppose and rules some of the newer boats out.

Although I completely understand and agree with comments about participating in a large class, and I'm certainly prone to that kind of thinking... I can only afford one boat right now and I'm willing to make a lot of compromises for performance; including a six Foot Beam I think. I have some time on cats including a 18' G-Cat but not a tremendous amount of experience with monohulls. I'm afraid of being disappointed with the performance. I want to go as fast as possible without having to be concerned with sinking the boat.

The Elliott has been to 18kts, the Melges is about the same. Look at J22, J24 and Catalina 22 for your price range

After looking at the PHRF list I was surprised to see the where the Sabre stands. It seems like 32' with only a 6' Beam would be a fairly quick boat. Obviously it's an older hull.

That boat as far as I recall is sort of a cruising version of a 5.5. meter sloop.
It's short on the DWL and I suspect the rating would reflect that.
Spiffed up with good sails it would be a fun boat to race.

Exactly, it is a 5.5 with a cabin. I did finnaly notice the Length at waterline; only 22' I think. Still, very cool looking boat.

I have never reinstalled the ice box, or the galley sink and counter top. These items are all here, just haven't needed them as I day sail her only. Aside from that, a fresh coat of paint on the cabin top and cockpit. No major issues, just day to day maintenance...fresh varnish, a couple of lines need replacing. Maybe two weekends worth of work.

My favorites would include the old Tartan 10 (We won 4 Rolex's on one called Cold Beer in the BVI) J105 is bit more modern than the J30 because of the sprit and more cruising capable than the Tartan or J30. J28 or maybe the J32 I think was made with cruising and racing in mind. Beneteau First Designs, Albergs, Frers, Take a look at the CBYRA Wed night series boat list. There are some neat ones out there.
