Hello Everyone!

Hello Everyone,

My name is Jack, and I am 20. I have been following this site for a while now and decided it's my time to register. I am the owner of a 1983 Catalina 25 tall rig. She's old, but fast (IMO) Has a 15hp evinrude that runs strong and all electric works. No gauges and a few of the switches...just do nothing? I would like to restore this boat as best I can to full working order and make it much more modern, in terms of gear on board. I have been sailing since I was a very little boy, I race jy15's and some others. I have a ton of sailing experience and have been sailing this boat for about 2 years now. I really want to get moving with working on it. But anyway, I just wanted to say hello and see how the day has been? I spent today in Charleston and seeing the marina made me want to go sailing. My boat is docked back home in Augusta on Lake Strom Thurmond. What can I do to my C25 to make her cruiser ready? I would like to be able to leave the marina and stay out for a weekend or longer, if that helps. Where is the best place to order parts for my boat? we do have a westmarine in town. Hopefully someday can make my way to the coast. thanks for your time.

Re: Hello Everyone!

Boat cushions, and a sleeping bag are a great start, and then just spend the night on board. I don't think you need a ton of gear or lots of modifications to do what you want to do. Keep it simple, inexpensive, and have lots of fun.

Re: Hello Everyone!

Best thing is to just start heading out for overnight then extended trips and see what you need. It is really just like camping or caravan and experience will help you whittle down the necessities. This is also why it is nice to start with such a simple little boat.

As seaworthy as you make it! For inspiration have a read of Robin Lee Graham's "Dove".

Sorry about the delay in posting a reply - I have been busy getting my own boat ready for an extended cruise.

Re: Hello Everyone!

definitely take a crew, wine and a barbeque and remember practise safe sex,an unexpected pregnancy can really screw up the rest of your cruising prospects.....

otherwise just go a gps and a few charts are all you need really......
