Hanse 411 for Blue-Water...

G'day!

I am interested in some general opinion about the Hanse 411, not only for coastal cruising but also as a Blue-Water boat to live on whilst cruising Australia, New Zealand the South Pacific?

Any thoughts much appreciated!

Cheers, Peter

Peter,
Almost any boat made can sail the milk runs. The opinions here from experienced sailors range from one extreme to the other (heavier well built boats to lightly built ex-charter boats) so recognizing that everyone here including you is bias so its going to be a personal decision.
If the boat has proper storage and tankage and suits you personally I'm sure it will work just fine .

Hi Robert,

Yes of course mate and I of course have my personal views but ut would be great to hear from someone who has a Hanse 411 and 'been there done that' for some 'first hand' thoughts.

Appreciate your reply,

Cheers, Peter.

Hey Gord
I had nothing better to do so checked out the site myself. Good site. The owners group for this boat talk about a lot of little stuff but included broken rudder without being hit, a couple of dismastings and the internal pan breaking away from the hull. Fairly typical I guess depending on the year it was built. One fellow sailed the ARC and seemed to find the boat just fine, he only complained about the tankage being a bit small.

Hi Robert, the broken rudder is a typical Hanse problem caused by the fact that they use an aluminum instead of stainless steel rudder shaft. The aluminum shaft is subject to extreme corrosion especially when used in combination with anti fouling containing copper. But also electrolytically corrosion can easily cause extreme damage to the aluminum shaft. Regular inspection is necessary to avoid unpleasant surprise of loosing your rudder ( and avoid the use of anti fouling that contains copper in the rudder area). I experienced this problem after 7 years on my Hanse 371 and had the rudder replaced.
