Good Boat Inspector in South Florida

I am looking to see if anyone knew a really good boat inspector in Southern Florida and the East coast? I thought I had found a good one, but he does not go up the mast to check the rigging. Is that normal?

Please let me know if anyone has some good suggestions?

Thanks!

Well, get him on deck, and when he's not looking, let loose a pack of wild hyenas and see if that doesn't get him up the mast.

Re: Good Boat Inspector in South Florida

Jon Howe went up the mast on my boat for two insurance surveys.

A surveyor that doesn't go up the mast?

Keep his name, you'll want him when you sell the boat.

As far as good suggestions, I'll give you a good suggestion. Surveyors are like brokers, Cavet Emptor. Though most insurance companies want a survey, hire a good marine electrician, a good marine electronics guy, a good marine diesel mech, and a good rigger. Pay them for a few hours of their time.

And as with all posts on any board, Caveat lector.

Re: Good Boat Inspector in South Florida

I remember hearing of someone who sent a camera up the halyard to view stuff aloft, though I wonder if they were able to rig something to see the shrouds and along the spreaders.

Re: Good Boat Inspector in South Florida

Call Nance and Underwood in Ft.Lauderdale, ask for Roger Underwood, use my name Pat N. formerly from there now in Tampa, and ask Roger for his advice. They are sailmakers for Mack Sails, do rigging inspections, and if he can help U he will or give U advice on who can.

He has made my sails and inspected my rigging more than once. Use my name, no problem.

Re: Good Boat Inspector in South Florida

Here in Australia marine surveyors only check out the hull and deck integrity. The rigging is left to a qualified rigger as they have to issue a rigging certificate (that's every ten years). The gas installation also has to have a separate inspection with a gas certificate. I am a marine surveyor and do check the rigging, but my word is not enough. Same as the motor, I listen to it run and check the installation but I am no mechanic. It is all about liability and what my insurance company covers me for.

Re: Good Boat Inspector in South Florida

I interviewed a few surveyors in south Florida to do a survey on a 1986 43' Catalina Morgan I am purchasing. Found the same thing as you with going aloft. Settled on Mr Paul Anstey out of Rockledge Fl (near Stuart). He has an extensive history with sailboast and he does go aloft. The survey is scheduled for next Monday 26 Jan in Stuart Fl. I will let you know what I think when it is done.

Re: Good Boat Inspector in South Florida

Greenport 99, Just wrapped up a survey using Paul Anstey out of east coast Florida. Believe he is from the Fort Pierse area. He did a through and expert job to include going aloft. I would recommend him.
