What would be good boat for sailing the pacific with decent speeds? What rig would you recommend?

Pogo 40 (-like), original rig.

Outremer 43, (-like), original rig.

A power boat like the Iron Horse will also cruise fast.

There are thousands of designs that would be good for sailing in the Pacific. For me the answer is easy. High latitudes - a good monohull. Low latitudes and trade wind sailing - a catamaran. But those are just my preferences.

The Best Boat for cruising the Pacific, or any other ocean, is a Full Keel, Heavy Displacement, Stern-hung rudder, Gaff-rigged boat. Avoid Canoe Sterns, as they're ugly and space-wasting. Anything bigger than 36 feet is a waste, unless you have four or more children. If it's a cutter-rigged gaffer, so much the better. Fiberglass hull, of course, and no inboard engine (you can rip it out and put an outboard on the transom). I suggest a Cape George 31 or 36 cutter, Falmouth 34, Bristol Pilot Cutter 28, or Heard 35. All these boats as described will give you better than average speeds for their waterline, when fully loaded for cruising (that's important), across the widest range of conditions. Where other boats excel in speed, they do so at cost to cargo capacity or ability to carry sail in bad weather or sturdiness of construction (whatever others may say, there is no more reliable, simple steering system than a stern-hung rudder with a tiller. All others are more complicated and more liable to failure).

Most designs will sail above their average speed (a point half-way between zero and their hull speed). Avoid the area between Galapagos and Panama though where it tends to be very light.
