Free Sailboat Project

GOOD DAY FOLKS,

Yesterday I found a small sailboat on Kijiji advertised in the free section.

I called the storage facility that had re possessed the boat due to the owner not having paid his storage fees.

I found that not only was the yard where the boat is located only 30 mins north of where I live but it is the same yard that I had bought my Bayfield 32c about 5 years ago.

I jumped in the truck to see what condition this free boat was in.

To my surprise it turned out to be a rough but structurally sound little pocket cruiser.

It is roughly 18-20ft in length with a fair beam. It has a Centerboard keel, spacious cockpit and surprisingly functional interior with two full length berths forward (split v berth) a small galley / navigation table on both port and starboard sides with two full length quarter berths on both sides running underneath the cockpit seats.

I went back to the office after inspecting the boat and paid for a month of storage fee's ($30) and wrote up a bill of sale.

My plan for the boat is to do a full restoration and use the boat as a pocket cruiser for the great lakes.

My only issue is I have no idea what kind of boat this is, which is a first for me as I normally can identify a boat's manufacture from buying and browsing boats for so many years.

If anyone can tell me what kind of boat I have here it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Re: FREE SAILBOAT PROJECT

The boat registration number is still intact, I guess you could use that.

I hate to bring this up but I'm afraid you got a free liability here.

From the photos, it appears this boat has been stripped and now needs to be scrapped and dumped, which will cost money to do. The owner gave it to you "free" to save himself the cost of dumping.

I'm afraid that it can never be worth the cost that it will take to restore it to operational condition.

Maybe I'm wrong and this boat's hardware is tucked neatly away outside camera view.

There is a complete rig for the boat I need to cut some sails which is not a big deal, theres a rudder and tiller and there is a trailer in the yard that we are going to set the boat on. I like projects like this Im not restoring it with the hopes of selling it for a profit but just for my own personal enjoyment.

Whew! Sorry, but you get all kinds on here. I really didn't want to be "that guy". Hope you enjoy the undertaking!

Re: Free Sailboat Project

At some time in the past, she was the star in someone's eye... I admire you for taking on bringing her back to her past glory! Don't let the naysayers deter you... A good sanding and couple of coats of paint along with a few weeks of sweat equity and you will have a great little cruiser of which you will be very proud. Take photos of the progress you make and share them on CF... Good luck with your project! Phil
