Found This Crack ...

it is on the starboard side. there is no soft areas around and im thinking maybe just a superficial crack. no moisture or any other indication of damage. any thoughts?

Re: found this crack..

Is that under a deck? Tabbing failure I'd guess from flexing.

Re: found this crack..

Just pay attention to it and don't worry about it if it doesn't get worse.

Re: Found This Crack..

might wanna explore it some further-- take off paint and look closely and retab if necessary.. gooodluck. looks like a delamination problem--might be a water intrusion somewhere close by or mast step. or the boat was twisto-flexed in racing conditions..

Re: Found This Crack..

well the rig was retensioned as per my previous posts so i was thinking maybe it was due to that, there is no delam that i can see, no soft spots or anything and its not really the glass job, just the spray stuff they put over it. its not near the shrouds or turnbuckles and like i said, no water or moisture.

Re: Found This Crack..

That looks like a typical stress concentration riser, not a delam'. Watch it, but don't panick. To stop the crack from propagating further, drill a small {1/16 - 1/8" dia) hole at each end.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stress_concentration

Re: Found This Crack..

Observe it closely while under sail on both Port & stbd tacks to see if there is any flexing. If not it's cosmetic, if it does you'll have to dig deeper.

Re: Found This Crack..

If you can stick a very thin flexible putty knife into it very far it's a delam. Looks like failed tabbing to me. The crack seems to closely follow where the edge of the glass tab would normally be. I like a pallette knife for checking for delam.

Re: Found This Crack..

If it's superficial it will dissapear as you dig into it to explore further.

If not, then you want to fix it anyway.

Re: Found This Crack..

That looks like a sprayed in liner, which is usually pretty thick and brittle. It could just be the liner that is cracked...or could be from shrinkage due to too hot a mix. Has it always been there? As mentioned...chipping away at it will tell if it's a glass problem or just a visual defect. I wouldnt worry to much about it though. Is there a chainplate attached to that bulkhead? ...dont see one... boats do flex!

Re: Found This Crack..

no bulkhead and yes it is the spray liner. ill check a little later to see if it more than cosmetic. its not near anything structural but i am wondering if tensioning the rigging had anything to do with it. it was not rigged correctly for years and now i set the shrouds tighter than they have been but its not near the chainplate. i hope that all it is with being brittle..

Re: Found This Crack..

I could bend my 44" boat about 4" bow to stern with my backstay adjuster...so yea...that little 22 is gonna flex!

Re: Found This Crack..

If no chainplate there then pulling unlikely, so probably the boat got a bit squeezed at the dock. Never let the big guy tie alongsides ...

Re-laminate, keep on rolling.

I see a partial bulkhead (knee like) so it is a structural part of the hull. It is the force that this partial bulkhead puts on the underside of the deck that did this.

ciao!
Nick.
