Yup, I agree. My wife and I were gifted a 69columbia28. It was in ct. And on hard for 10 years. I told my wife I will only accept it if the engine turns over by hand, it did and two days later after further inspection it became a 700$ boat due to transport only 8 miles even. Four months later after new friends , new callouses , we launched her. She's in North Carolina now.Registration was not difficult as previous owner had papers in order. But ct has different if not strange rules as to that. I registered dingy in Wisconsin.
I have since registered a 28yo (Alabama tri hull )boat , never launched and no paperwork, in Wisconsin with no problem whatsoever.
I don't understand these horror stories about not being able to register boats.
Had another from an unpaid storage fee purchase. Bought , registered, sold it and was sent pics of it in Caribean having a fun time.
Now if you want to insure these boats that may present a greater task and more footwork , hehe.

Well...the bronze winches might be worth something to somebody.

I have a P26 that I couldn't sell for the value of the Yamaha 9.9.

The market for used boats of this era is flooded. If you could get the boat for $1000-2000 I am sure that it would be worth restoring.

Boatyards often put liens on boats with unpaid bills. I know is it possible to re-title cars when there is no paperwork, just takes time.

I would talk to someone at the CA DMV and see what they say about a boat with no papers and a lien from the boatyard.

Ariels are great, strong boats, might be worth it.

Progressive did not require survey for us. But after a damaging Seatow ungrounding they ended up surveying and declaring our boat "unseaworthy". So beware and ask lots of questions.
This is fodder for a whole another thread which I'd rather not even get into.
I was told Boat US has different plans to chose from. Not when we were looking.
Don't leave port without tow insurance or liability insurance. Why insure a free boat for value unless one plans on burning it to fleece the insurance, shame !

1000-2000$ for an insurance job? Dock master does the deal? Pics of another boat? Just imagine it took a dive in the slip. Now that would make the outboard an anchor. They'd have to pay to have her hauled off.
Even the nicest people selling boats tend to have amnesia or suffer from sins of omission. ;-)

Glad to see there's a little honest friendly competition out there Beck...

Maybe if we put together package deals we can get a few less percentage points on our return...

Re: Found a great boat really cheap! but...

Thank you everyone, I appreciate the confirmation of my gut feeling.

The boat may work out well for someone else, but I think my first should be a little more standard purchase transaction.

The boat from this thread is in G basin, and it is a little rough. (I saw it during my last lesson)

I am the new kid, and I put some details in my "profile" not sure where that shows up.

What I am looking for is an Alberg. I would really like an Archer, Herreshoff or Atkin, but I digress, my funds run shy, and my woodworking is lackluster.

somewhere around 30 feet. Macharj approved underbody and rig, sloop. inboard diesel that will check out by my mechanic, no soft spots or leaking hull deck joint. recent standing rigging, and great sails. I wouldn't mind some good windlass/anchor/chain stuff, but dodgers and other canvas, offshore gear, and electronics are not important.

I am the new kid, and your help is appreciated!

I see this somehow ended up in multihull, whoops...

I think your anxiety finally caught up with your excitement... Hard to beat that "almost free beast back into the corner....

Well... Then walk over a couple gates, take a look @ my boat... Then start a thread of what a purdy girl she is!

Well, as one who has one of the older classics, that is a sad (though not at all uncommon) tale of a very nice little boat. But if you are in this market, I suppose you are looking at Pearson Tritons and Vanguards, Alberg 29 and 30, and Columbia 29 like mine (S&S!) There was a beauty for sale down a while back in Newport that was like new, probably sold by now though. But if you do a searchtempest from SF to SD I bet you'll find a good one. I remember seeing a Triton for sale up in SF a year ago that was also in beautiful shape. They do pop up.

Re: Found a great boat really cheap! but...

Just a note that California DMV only needs a bill of sale to register a boat. A blonde sailor chic acquired a old sailboat that way, many years ago. Mind you for a 1960's 26' sailboat, it better be cheaper then $3000. $1000 might be ok, if the outboard was good.

But I would look for something in the 30 foot with a inboard diesel. Much better and not really that much more.

My wife is a lawyer. You can not own a boat without the title. You won't be able to register it. Don't
touch it, Until he can give you the title. Do not put one penny into it. Don't move it. Don't do anything. It will not be a boat. It will be a LIABILITY
