For All You Penny-pinchers . . .

People new to the Forum with big dreams and small bank accounts often ask about bluewater-capable vessels that might be obtained for small sums, and the truth is that such a thing is rare, if it's even possible at all. But in today's 'Lectronic Latitude comes word that just such an opportunity may exist:

* * * * *

"Want a Morgan Out Island 41 for $10,000?

"June 4, 2008 – Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

We can't imagine that Shimmer is in bristol condition, but here's what Nels Toberson's Morgan Out Island 41 Bronco looked like during a recent Ha-Ha.

"Looking for what might be a lot of boat for the money? Mary Ewenson of Spinsheet magazine back in Annapolis says that Dave Johansen, a neighbor of hers, has decided to end his proposed voyage from Huatulco, Mexico, to San Francisco in Puerto Vallarta. Why? A combination of weather, engine problems, money, and a great job opportunity."

* * * * *

For the rest of the story, go to:

I had actually thought of you, kai, when I saw this information on 'Lectronic Latitude.

This vessel is way out of position, of course, if you're set on sailing to Bermuda or the Bahamas, but if it doesn't have to be either of those places, and you have even a modicum of mechanical ability, then this is the kind of opportunity that an enterprising young man like yourself might find irresistible. You might even take along some buddies who have certain mechanical skills that you lack - make it a kind of Spring Break adventure. You'd love PV.

If you have a great trip, end up with a really substantial vessel that you'd keep down on Mexico's west coast and haven't spend a fortune to accomplish all that, well, what a great way to start your post-collegiate life!

Nice deal, not quite as good as the deal I got but hell, what is? If I had the money and needed a boat to cruise with, I'd surely take a trip to go see her.

They've updated the story at 'Lectronic Latitude with a picture of the actual vessel:

Shimmer is not an Out Island but a full keel aft cockpit Morgan.

Looks like a lot of boat for $10k.

Because your post, perhaps indirectly, calls me to account, I thought it best to contact the owner of the vessel for additional information and pictures, if available. If he responds to my email (or if he doesn't respond to my email) I'll post that here.

Great, because I have a friend I want to send there with the 10k.

It might well end up looking like the "great race" or whatever that goofy movie about the treasure across the country was.

If it sounds to good to be true it usually is.
I paid a fair price for my boat, stole it, but it needed 10k+ in repairs the surveyor missed.
I am still ahead by 8k

Its not uncommon here on the west coast,
I became friends with a guy that bought a 45 foot power boat, good looking boat and he spent 3 years outfiting it for cruising Mexico.
He left last October with his girlfriend.... Made it as far as Moro Bay when she got off and took a bus back to the Delta and their home.. Told him she'd never get on the boat again... Guess they ran into some bad weather.
Anyway, he purchased the boat for $150K, must have invested another 50k in up-grades and he just sold the boat for 25k..

LOL - For half the money he lost you could have overloaded the boat with "replacement" crew in this part of the world.

When a woman walks away - let her...
