Polux who believes smaller flush deck boats are not worth building - I have to strongly disagree and here is why.

Yaraandoo II is a Naut Forty (hence 40 Ft) designed by Joe Adams (for the charter Market) and built by Naut Yachts in Mona Vale, north Sydney in Australia.

She did a world circumnavigation with her previous owner who, purchased the completed Hull and Deck and then kitted her out with solid teak below decks.

We have proudly owned her for 20 years and have added nearly 90,000 nms around the Pacific. We are constantly upgrading, new engine, new sails, new instruments, new galley, new upholstery, ducted heating etc and added clears around the cockpit before we sailed to Alaska. The latest addition being flexible solar panels on the bimini so we can keep the batteries topped up and leave the boat for longer exploration forays ashore.

We could not afford the wonderful hulls Polux posted. Our 40 footer is easily handled and is comfortable to sail. We just completed a trip from Eden to Tasmania across Bass Strait (before the Sydney to Hobart Boats) and did 183 nms the first day and 187 nms the second. We had 2 reefs in the main and a stay sail and had no water on deck until be took the wind on the nose for the last 20 miles and although we were covered in salt spray and green water we did not get wet. We love our flushed deck home. Cheers Sue
That is a gorgeous boat! WOW just WOW....

Re: Flush Deck Boats Illustrated Guide

I agree. You can find some that were converted to a more common entry (aft and smaller cockpit).

Every 8? Is she kept in a hangar in between the seasons?

In the Med or Caribbean, this would be about every 3 years the topsides and once a year the deck-side (cabin, rails, etc.)

WOW!

If one were to board that boat I think anyone would think "classy yacht."

Thanks for posting it here. I am going to add that (with photos) to another thread, because that boat is outstanding.

Yes, one has to have money for a boat like that, a lot of money, for purchase and maintenance (including appearance). But, what a head turning boat it must be, and that has a lot of priceless value.

Notice it has a head with toilet and a bidet too.

I suppose it is a matter of opinion on what we should classify as a "Flush Deck" boat, though I think there was a formal definition posted earlier in this thread, long ago.

In my view, and use, it is a boat where:

1. MOST of the deck appears flat or flush to the edge of the deck.

2. The wheel house, pilot house, or trunk cabin (if there is one) does not extend past the main mast

This is my own rough rule, there may be exceptions.

For example, there may be a low trunk cabin, or a pilot house, or wheel house, or not, in what I see as a "Flush Deck" boat.

I call it when I see most of the forward half of the boat looks mostly flush. In other words, I am tolerant of some things sticking up above the deck. That is my view of "Flush Deck" and as has been said of art: "I know it when I see it."

Others may see it differently.

Hope that helps.
___________

Now that I have written that, I will no doubt find some exceptions or better formal definition or reason to think otherwise.

Like the weather, I reserve the right to change.

Steady's Notes:

If any CF member has a Kadey Krogen 38, I would very much like to go for a sail on one. Why? It is a boat I admire. Please let me know via a PM and as I am traveling the USA ports in 2017 looking at boats, I may be in your area. I am not in the market to buy one this year, but I would like to sail on one, if you need crew or for a day sail.

The Kadey Krogen 38 Cutter is a boat I have admired for several reasons:

Shallow Draft with Dual Centerboards (minimum draft = 3' 2")

Flush Deck (or Raised Deck)
Design for maximum headroom inside saloon, and a nice deck for storing a hard dinghy or nesting dinghy (my preference).

Traditional styling (Decorative details such as trailboards on the bow, a bowsprit, etc.)

Large Cockpit and large Lazarette lockers for storing cruising gear.

Unusual interior layout with athwartship double in aft stateroom, nice for living on the hook.

Traditional styling in the interior, with wood and a comfortable looking salon and galley.

This design was admired by Robert Perry, a naval architect whose own designs have a wide following and whose judgement many respect. I don't always agree with his views, but I found his remarks about this boat design particularly interesting (see below).
_____________

NOTE: As in earlier posts, I am posting a mix of photos from a mix of boats to illustrate this model. There may be differences in boats from one year to another. The photos I post are to be used to get a general idea of the boat model and type. As with all boat buying: Caveat Emptor!

_____________
Robert Perry Review of the Kadey Krogen 38
http://www.kadeykrogen.com/articles/...ftingtable.htm

"There is nothing better than a flush deck to set off a handsome hull."
"This is a very interesting design"

"James S. Krogen designed this yacht for himself and is presently having it built in Taiwan. Those of you who have followed yacht design over the years will be well acquainted with the work of Mr. Krogen. His designs have always been amongst my favorites."

"If this design did not have tandem centerboards I might worry about weather helm, but the boards will take care of that. The sail area to displacement ratio is generous at 17.5, indicating to me that Mr. Krogen likes to sail fast. The low aspect ratio configuration of this rig will make it quick on a reach, the one point of sail where the staysail can really do some work. The benefit of this rather large rig is that it will enable the boat to move well in light air without the need for genoas bigger than 130 percent. "

APRIL 2017 UPDATE:

Kadey Krogen 38

I happen to like the design very much. Because it is a Flush Deck boat design, it has a lot of room inside. Notice the following about this design:
1. It also has a nice double berth aft (good for liveaboard)
2. very nice teak traditional interior with comfortable looking salon,
3. nice galley,
4. comfortable looking cockpit (for spending a lot of time in when anchored)
5. SHALLOW draft (two centerboards). Designed for shallow waters. Minimum draft = 3' 2"
6. Separate shower in aft head. Nice to have.

If I were looking for a boat on which to spend years cruising up and down the ICW or Atlantic Coast or Bahamas and Keys, this boat would be high on my list.

I like the traditional styling (motif) with the decorative trailboards on the bow, the clipper bow, the bow sprit, and the stern. One should like the looks of their boat, and I like that traditional styling.

Also note, I have a live link in that thread to a 1992 KK 38 that is listed for sale on Yachtworld.

When I wrote that profile the Asking Price was $114K.
I checked the listing again today and saw the Asking Price has droppped $15K since last year and is now asking price $99K.

As with any boat, what suits one person will not fit another. I am pointing out this boat based on my taste, and my view of what would be a very nice boat to own and live aboard and cruise on the waters described above. YMMV.

My friends have a Krogan 38 on Lake Ontario. Previous owned passed during restoration, they got it in pieces and lovingly restored it. A marvelous boat that looks stunning under sail. Huge interior, deck space is fantastic.

Re: Flush Deck Boats Illustrated Guide

Howdy Sailors!

"Clear the Deck!"

Show Your Flush Deck Boat Sailing!

Now that the summer sailing season has started in North America, I think it is time for this thread to show some Flush Deck Boats (FDB) in the act of sailing!

Please post a photo of YOUR boat sailing, or of your favorite Flush Deck Boat model sailing.

Whether it is your own Pride and Joy, or your Dream Boat, let's show the CF members what makes the Flush Deck Boats so special.

Perhaps you have a photo of your Flush Deck Boat gunk holing in the Chesapeake. Or a photo showing your nice clean foredeck. Or showing your easy way to stow your dinghy on the deck. Or a photo showing you and the admiral dancing on your nice open "dance floor" flush deck. Or a photo of some swimsuit beauties lounging or sunning on the nice flush deck. Show us.

Let's put in some more photos to illustrate the Flush Deck Boat world here in this thread.

IF you don't have a photo of your own boat sailing, then do a Google image search and find a sistership. Or post a photo of another Flush Deck Boat you admire.

And, if you have been doing some cruising on your Flush Deck Boat, take a photo from your blog or own site and share it here, with some comments about what you liked about your boat on your cruise. Tell others about YOUR boat or your model.

Let's see some sails! Let's see some boats!
