First post, new member, Watkins 27

Just wanted to say hello. I just purchased a 1979 Watkins 27 to play with this summer. It has some high points (new main sail, roller furling headsail, new cushions, etc) but also some low points (transmission stuck in forward, crack in keel). The price was right and it has great potential!

I have been a lurker on this forum for 4 years now...learned a lot, but just got my boat so I figured I'd actually sign up.

I'm going to be keeping the boat in a slip in Edgewater, MD. Anyone nearby?

-Matt

Thanks Chadc!

I see you have the same year boat...could you tell me how the table in your cabin stands up? There must be a piece missing to mine...some sort of double leg right? Could you take a picture for me please?

Mine has two removable aluminum legs that fit into holes on the bottom side of the table, the main part and the drop leaf. I don't think that they are original equipment but they get the job done well enough. I'll take a pic when I get home this afternoon, I live aboard the Watkins.

Thanks! Very spacious boat for the size! I'm planning on using it for weekends with my 4 kids...should be just about big enough.

Is your traveler behind the helm, or on the cabin top? Mine is behind the helm and I'd like to move it. Curious to see if others have done it. I'm pretty sure I've seen pictures of people's with it on the cabin top.

Hiya Matt;

Mine was missing the legs, too; so I simply fabb'd up a drop-gate leg. Lotta potential in the Old Watkins 27's. I also considered the mid-boom traveler; but cost/versus was too high for my tastes
The trans shifter could be anywhere on the line from shifter to intern forks . Best diagnosis would be to start with taking off the telefle cables and see if it will shift manually at the lever on the tranny.
Where's tthe crack?Nothing's really irrepairable. Just takes a bit more work!

Best,
Paul

Welcome. I have a 1980 Watkins 27 I am working on. Great first sailboat for me and my family. Be sure to check out the Watkins Owners community on Google+ and www.watkinsowners.com for some great information.

I actually looked at that boat before making a purchase this year. Home port Norfolk, VA. Lots of work to do but a dream coming true.

With your transmission, check that the cable hasn't just stretched or broken rather than it been a problem with the transmission itself. It's happened to me that way before. Easy fix if it is just the cable.
