First Boat!

My wife and I bought our first boat the other day! It's got a little deeper draft (4 ft) and a little smaller cabin than we were looking for, but it's in great shape, has fresh bottom paint, a solid trailer, included a slip through September, and we got it for a good price. Plus this is our first boat to try it out and make sure we use the thing. we've both sailed all our lives, but this is the first one that is actually ours.

So, it's a Kirby 23, designed by Bruce Kirby. It sounds like there were only a few made (8 according to sailboat data) and it is the Sonar hull with a bigger cabin and some other mods. We also weren't looking for a racing boat, but I think it will fit the bill for the time being. Hoping to do some day sailing and overnights with a weekend being the longest, most likely.

I haven't been able to find much info on these boats, so any input would be great. We're hoping to launch her this weekend. Hopefully all the pieces parts for the rigging are there...Sure is nice to be able to finally add a boat to my signature on here...

Re: First Boat!

If the hull is the same as a Sonar it appears she should be fast for her size.

Congratulations!. Good luck in getting her all together and out on the water. My first boat was a Catalina 22 and I think your Kirby is going to be a bit faster and an exciting sailer.

kind regards,

Congrats

I'm new to sailing...

Not so much boat ownership but from one nube to another... Cheers!

Re: First Boat!

The Sonar is my favorite daysailer of all time, so I think you made a good choice.

Re: First Boat!

So you're all saying that the "open water" (by my standards, "open water" is anything greater than 1 mile from the coast) is a safer and easier passage than a circumnavigation of Long Island ???

Sorry but I'm not following you. Was "open water" mentioned in this thread?

I've only seen Long Island from the shoreline in one or two spots but it seems like a pretty difficult circumnavigation. Lots of traffic and tides and opportunities to run aground? I don't know. Just guessing since I haven't seen any other dialog on it.
