Re: Fin Keels - Skeg Hung Rudders - Full Keels

I'd heave to for wild salmon. Haven't had any in years.

The long keel guys could sail past me and I would'nt care.

Re: Fin Keels - Skeg Hung Rudders - Full Keels

Yeah ReeseDawg, I had to come back to work, just when things were getting interesting on the peninsula, and I won't be back before the end of the season. I am way motivated on completing my refit so I can get back out and continue my life long sampling of mother nature's bounty in Alaska.

Re: Fin Keels - Skeg Hung Rudders - Full Keels

i dont use cream base in my chowder--is more like a boulliabase instead--awesome-- got recipe from a now dead dane--my grandmother..LOL.... excellent stuff and adaptable to many kinds of seafoods...is sooo rich i rarely make it anymore...
and if my boat is being hand steered,i place in irons to boat a fish-- otherwise i let auto do his job and bring itin anyway--lol is easier to boat a fish while in irons.

Re: Fin Keels - Skeg Hung Rudders - Full Keels

Roger that zeehag, I admit, I cheat, I use hydraulic reels or a heavy hand line. Plus I am running real slow. Usually we use half/half cream for the chowder base, I also like cocoanut milk, I have never worked with boulliabase, so I have no experience with it. All I know is I never use low fat, sugar free, or "light" ingredients in my cooking, I hate that stuff.

To comment on the above: I mentioned this thread to a buddy here in the frozen north. He observed that the fella cheerfully leaving the "ancient vessel with a full keel" in his wake could 12 hours later be the same guy who'll be slinging drogue and spitting seawater while trying not to broach while the former will be below drinking soup while hove to during a squall. Any truth to that idea?
Nope. Bash is a very experienced sailor and knows his ****.

Not gonna happen.

No need to get defensive Sarafina.

I read no criticism of Bash, just the poster throwing out one of the old fin keel vs full keel arguments and wanting to know what we think of it.

Re: Fin Keels - Skeg Hung Rudders - Full Keels

i have sailed thru squalls in sloops with fin and spade and i have sailed thru em in full keeled boats. so one can go 10 kts in 71 kt winds. so the other only goes 8 kts in 60 kt winds..big deal. it comes down to how tired from having to work the helm of the fin/spade combo as opposed to the ease felt dealing with the full keeled ketch in the big winds. i prefer the ketch with a full keel--had much less weather helm and handled much smoother in big stuff. the difference is impressive. i picked the correct one to cruise. we were totally exhausted after the work we did sailing thru the storms during that near year i spent in gulf of mexico on board that sloop. we didnt have to work nearly as hard with my formosa on the way here from ensenada, despite quartering seas and big winds on lee shore of a rocky coast....

Re: fin keels, skeg hung rudders, full keels...

I am confused your saying that this full keel boat eases your anxiety when going to a marina . I keep hearing everyone saying they are harder to maneuver . Is it better or worse , if you can explain your view on this and if possible help me to understand if you could, why many find maneuvering in tight quarters troublesome and you find it helpful.
