External bow thrusters

We recently got a quote of $12,000 to install a bow thruster on a Moody 46. That hefty price tag led us to research alternatives. For about half that amount we could install an external bow thruster, one brand is an Exturn, but there are others. Of course, the sales information, videos.... look pretty good, but does anyone have one of these and can comment on how well it works?

They probably work ok until you hit something and knock them off.

Re: External bow thrusters

I'd avoid a vulnerable exterior thruster risking damage from a floating obstacle, line, going aground, beaching, and so on. I have an internal thruster.

Re: External bow thrusters

Has anyone considered jet boat technology applied to bow thruster application? No external unit to damage on floating debris or prop to tangle with lines, watertight doors when not in use or to alter thruster direction....
