Re: Endurance 35 bow spirt

looks like you need to have someone teach you how to create these items with new wood.
i have replaced my mizzenboom via carpenter in colimilla , colima, mexoico. rather inexpensively.
there are write ups on these in leaky teaky yacht club, a yahoo group. email addy in my signature.

Hi

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately I'm a long way from Mexico, currently in Italy......

Probably expensive to get made

Re: Endurance 35 bow spirt

Have some clever Italian machine shop fab one out of aluminum. If they can build a Ferrari, the Italians can certainly build a bowsprit.

The PO of our Formosa had one fabbed here in L.A. for about half the cost of a teak 6x6 log

Re: Endurance 35 bow spirt

you could scarfe a new post onto the old base with epoxy and it would be stronger than new,as for the sprit looks like an easy build for a carpenter.I am a carpenter and reckon its 1 to 2 days work at most.

Re: Endurance 35 bow spirt

Not really a tough repair or replacement if you have any experience with tools. And even if you're a neophyte, so long as you think through the various steps, you should be able to DIY it. The trick is to build it a few times in your head prior to shopping for materials, or reaching for your tools.

Plus there are plenty of resources out there which show what's involved in similar repairs or fabrication. Both videos, & text with images. Look up some of the projects on the WEST System sight, & it's sister publication www.Epoxyworks.com And sheathing & sealing the new one/repaired one with epoxy would assist with preventing rot in the future. Just be sure to paint or varnish over the epoxy so that the UV doesn't kill it.

Also, you shouldn't have any trouble finding someone in the marina or anchorage to mentor you a bit on the project. That, or work out a deal to have them fab one for you. Sailors are almost always happy to help each other.

It's just a chunk of wood, At least you have the pattern. Or weld flanges on to Al pipe and substitute .

If you are heading that way there were lots of yards in both Morocco and Turkey that would do a good cheap job as they both still had a wooden boat industry. Otherwise you need a piece of cedar or similar durable pine and a tool to shape it. Can be done with a plane, adze or even a drum sander. Not a high skill task you just need to get a peice of wood about the same size and shape to replace it. I would not suggest anything like epoxy coating as one nick from the anchor will brake the seal and you will be worse of than just oiling it.

Re: Endurance 35 bow spirt

take care to clean the boat to remove all old timber flakes they contain wood rot spores/ask about Italian hard wood /demolition sites/use your old parts for templates/you may be able to laminate solid hardwood to repair the parts you have

Re: Endurance 35 bow spirt

Here in the land of plentiful wood, I've replaced many spars and sprits. After the wood is shaped, I use a lot of Zinc or copper napthalate .Standing on end long small hole, funnel full, let soak for days, reverse . all fittings,- drill holes and same treatment. No plastic, just oil/paint.Much seasoned timber comes out of old building reno's . Option, put old sprit on roof rack of the du chevaux and head to the coast where they know how to fix you up.
