Dufour Grand Large Series

Does anyone have any comments on the Dufour Grand Large boats (Build quality, problems, faults etc)?

There are only a couple of Owners forums and they have very little info on them compared to other forums (eg Hunter, Catalina, Hanse).

Less to complain about, or just not as many owners perhaps?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Dufour Grand Large Series

Hi!
Its been a few years, did you end up getting a Dufour GL?
I am currently considering a Dufour GL 455 2007, and are looking for the same information as you once did.

Have you found any useful forums for the Dufour GL?
Anyone out there with experience from the 455, or related Dufours?

I would be very happy for first hand information on the 455 in particular.

Thanks!

Re: Dufour Grand Large Series

Dufour builds their boats with a full liner and this liner is held together by plexus glue. Bulkheads are attached to the liner usually sitting in slots and glued. This type of construction is the least expensive way to build a sailboat as it saves a huge amount on labor plus they don't need highly skilled craftsmen to assemble these boats. That's exactly the same construction as Hunter or Beneteau or any number of production boats. So quality wise you might want to look at the fit and finish of the boat as well as how well it's been outfitted. Different floor plans will also make a difference to purchasers. They may not be built to the standards of an HR but you get a lot of boat for your money and for most peoples purposes they get the job done.

We looked Dufour at this years boat show in Miami.

I was disappointed with interior fit and finish. The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey was much tighter IMO.

Whether or not they were in good condition when new, the thing about these kinds of boats is that you have absolutely no idea what their condition is once they're second-hand. That's why I steered away from anything that was built with an internal liner and slot/glue bulkheads. You just don't know what's there. When buying second-hand you want to be able to view all of the structure, hull, keel, bulkhead tabbing, chainplate fixings, and so on.

Re: Dufour Grand Large Series

Found this thread on a French website and thought it might be of interest: https://www.hisse-et-oh.com/sailing/...-le-dufour-410
Comments essentially point out how larger Dufours seem not to be top-of-the-line boats. Stanchions jiggle. Cushions wear out. Cabin soles squeak. Some discussion of a rudder that broke. Posters suggested that there were few replies from owners either because they were all out sailing...or they had all sunk. It was mentioned that though a 41' Dufour costs about half of what a 41' Halberg-Rassey costs, and the HR comes with a full toolbox, it's the Dufour that should come with the toolbox.
