Drone footage of Tartan 37 sailing the Columbia River

Here is some recent drone footage of our Tartan 37 Betty Lou sailing the Columbia River on a sporting day where the wind was in the 18 - 24 knot range.

Nice. Did you take off and land from shore or was someone else doing the filming?

The drone was flown by an operator onshore at Sand Island. He had a spotter who's job is to keep the boat and drone in sight so that the pilot can focus on the video feed from the drone. At times we were a mile distant from the operator. Sometimes they use a third operator so that one person operates the camera while the pilot focuses on flying the drone.

BTW, this video was shot for inclusion in a short bio video that was produced by Columbia Sportswear. That video also has footage shot onboard the betty Lou. Here's the link:

Ah the things you can do with a good budget :-)

It was an awesome little bio. I went from climbing (sport with a bit of trad) to sailing as well. I find a lot of similarities between the sport from the mental aspects all the way down to the multiple levels of accessibility.

Cheers

Totally agree, Macblaze. So many similarities. Both sailing and climbing are all about using skills and technology to travel through a hostile environment in safety and relative comfort. I still do a lot of long distance backpacking, and the planning, preparation, and tools I use for that activity are very similar to what we go through before setting off on an offshore passage.

I'm working with some young guns in the mountaineering world to merge the two disciplines. Were planning a sailboat supported climbing expedition to SE Alaska where I will ferry the climbing team to Icy Bay, and they will do a tidewater approach to their climbing objective. Best of both worlds!

Well done! Looks like one of those rare days of good sailing in the ditch where there's enough wind not to be going backwards. St. Helens?

Thanks. New sails made by a local sailmaker Dale Waagmeester. Main is fully battened and loose footed, which really helps with shape. I have a good crew, but the reef in the big genny makes the tacking much easier. LOL

Yep, St. Helens. But we get pretty consistent afternoon winds in the summertime. And when we don't we do our favorite Columbia River sailing maneuver, we call it "drift and drink".

Great shots!

I have often been tempted to land on the southern or eastern side of sand island..

I fly that area a lot, here is a link to a video I shot when taking a friend on his first flight. Skip ahead to 10:00 for the river shots.. have to get together some time and do some videos!
