Does this look like something to avoid!

A boat for sale has an image below of the bilge which includes a keel bolt, so i assume it is the leading edge, I could be wrong, and then 6 or 7 seacock thru hull holes.

I know we all have Thru Hull fittings, but I try to minimise them and I would never clump them together like that, at the leading edge of the keel !

Am I wrong, does it matter?

Dunno, but it looks like it might be some form of sea-chest, where those ports ad valves go into a water filled chamber with but one through hull to the sea. If so, it would not compromise the hull strength in way of the keel.

Not so sure about that corrugated hose below the waterline & hose clamped on the corrugations.
Maybe it's better quality hose than it looks.

Re: Does this look like something to avoid!

Thanks Jim as always, you know far more than I do, yes, that would make some sense and be perfectly safe. Being a production boat, would they be likely to have such a feature, they probably cost money!

I suppose Deblin, that if Jim is correct (he usually is), there is really not any pressure from outside in, it is just a drain into a tank which then slowly empties through one thru hull

Re: Does this look like something to avoid!

I'm not so sure Johnathan. A seachest manifold is designed to minimise inlet or outlet through hulls. In the case of the pic it's likely to have a large through hull into the manifold, which stays full of water. Are the seacock shown inlet or outlets? Either way, they are under pressure and the wire reinforced pipes are probably not a good idea, especially with one hoseclamp on each. Usually I would have thought a manifold should be serviceable and replaceable. I can't imagine how this design would allow for servicing or replacing the seacocks. Maybe someone with more experience can shed some light...

The one thing that gives me pause is the pvc elbow on a below waterline application.

Re: Does this look like something to avoid!

If it is a sea chesh how would one go about servicing the thru hulls in the picture? Access to the other side would be needed in some way. I'm not familiar with sea chests, don't have one on our boat but am curious.

The 3 on the left side bank are labeled as:
"...... Discharge"
The other side labels , I couldn't read.
At very least it runs 3 drain lines into one thru-hull
I agree with above posts questioning types of hoses and attachment methods.

Your considering purchasing a boat and not hiring a SAMS or NAMS surveyor ???????? What was I thinking ???? Surveyors and I must admit there are good and bad, should be able to give you a great amount of insight into the underwater plumbing !!!

Re: Does this look like something to avoid!

It looks like that boat was well cared for and well organized. I'm not sure I like all that stuff, but it does show an organized owner. Not sure I like that many holes close together.
Appears to be maybe aft of the keel?

I don't see where he said that? There's a lot of distance between looking and buying.
