Do any Other Manufacturers do their Engine Room like Amel?

I've fallen in love with Amel Sailboats and it's mostly because of the engine room configuration. I like that you could easily drop a new engine or generator in their without much fuss and I like that it's not "claustrophobic", not that I suffer from that but I don't generally like tight spaces with crappy ventilation, especially when it's hot. Not the best place to work!

Are there any other boats that compete in this area at the same price point?

Of course.

Bigger boats that are not built for mass market charter work all tend to have good to excellent engine rooms.

Oyster, HR, Dashew, Kanter, to name a few.

I have seen the new Amel 55 a couple of months ago. They seem to have improved vastly from not all that pretty Amel 64. She looked great on the water then I saw her on dry. Cream.

Thanks for the reply. I just looked up the Oysters and couldn't find one with Amel's "open air" design. I'll look up the other ones too. I should note that when I said price point I meant the used Amel market. I'm looking at the Amel Super Maramu's and above made after 2000.

And I totally agree about the Amel 64, I don't know what it is but I do not like the look of it. I think it's how big the hard dodger is, it just doesn't look proportional and almost looks a bit exaggerated. I wouldn't kick one out of bed, however.

I know Amel Super Maramu engine room and it is very bad. I also know Amel 54 engine room and this is much better UNTIL owners start packing it up with optional extras.

Space is one thing, access can be another.

If you like open air, get open air.

"purely", no. But it was definetely on my top ten list. The engine is probably the most serviced and worked on part of any boat, power or sail. Fortunately the guy who designed the CSY knew that and made engine accessibility one of his major design criteria. Although my CSY 37 is an aft cockpit design, I can literally sit on my butt at engine level and reach every part of the engine/drive train.

Especially when the girls says "He spends 20% of his time down there" and he says" I spend a lot of my time in here"

I prefer my boat where it actually works

Can't say. Would be typical. Much as I have seen a Mango with side access too.

Well, it looks good at first light, but I have fallen down an open engine hatch on my own boat and recently a friend fell in as well on her boat and fractured her jaw. Her hubby forgot to warn her of the situation. (hatch open!!!!) Should be a flashing red light for that one.
Hard to sound proof that big hatch and still make it light enough to lift, also, there is a lot of heat sensitive electronics crammed in that small oven.
I know you need lots of room, but in our engine space there is only the engines and steering gear, the machinery room has the chargers, batteries, watermaker, inverter,etc. this is on a custom 55' alloy cutter. Just saying, there is more to it than meets the eye, so to speak.

We have a walk in engine room and love it... It was a requirement for us.
Every boat is a compromise....

Always make me wonder when the cockpit fills up with water and someone wont to get in or out of the engine rooms?

I have decent access in my pilothouse. I will be installing "clamshell" split hatches, gasketed, soundproofed, doggable and lifting on gas struts. 360 degree access is important to me.


Installation of the new engine, stringers and drive train would have been crazy if I only had access from the front and sides.

As long as you can extend the oil and fuel filters to an easily accessible point, and the water pump and vee belts are accessible from a side access do you really need a walk in?
If I had to look at my engine on such a regular basis that a walk in engine room was attractive then I would replace the engine.
