Displacement vs Trailing Weight

I have a quick question in regards to the relation between a boat's displacement and its trailing weight. I am looking at buying a boat, but do not want to buy a new car to tow it from one place to the next when I move. The boat is a C&C 24. The information I can find is that it displaces 3200lbs, with a ballast of 1050 lbs. I am trying to figure out if that means the boat will weigh only about 2000 lbs on the trailer (assuming the ballast is an empty-able tank) or if the trailerable weight will remain at 3200 lbs.

Thanks for any help that someone could provide.

Aloha Navy
Welcome aboard!! I'm retired Navy. Displacement weight is the weight of the boat probably with no gear on board or water in ballast tanks. (Dry weight) I didn't know C&Cs had ballast tanks but I'm certain they had different versions. When you find out the towing capacity of your vehicle then you have to consider the trailer weight, the boat plus related gear like anchors, outboard, dinghy and stores, etc..
Hope this helps.
Kind Regards,
JohnL

I doubt any older C&C 24 used water ballast. I'd be inclined to believe it will weight at least 3200 lbs.

The boat weighs 3200 pounds. The keel represents 1050 of those pounds. They do not have ballast tanks.

The best place for C&C infortmation is at: C&C Yachts - C&C Photo Album & Resource Center
The ballast in a 24, like all C&C's, was suspended lead.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. It looks as though I may need to look elsewhere - that will end up being a bit too much weight.

Does anyone know when water ballast started becoming more common in boat design?

Water ballast became more common when they started building trailerable sailboats, such as the MacGregor 26, Hunter 240 & 26, Catalina 250, et al. - probably sometime in the mid 1980's.
GEOFF VAN GORKOM, says:
”Water ballast, in one form or another, has been around for the past 150 years. It has only been in the last 20 years that racing boats have utilized water ballast as a performance enhancing feature in their design criteria...”
