Dismasting on the Hudson

We will be moving a 40 sailboat from the Chesapeake to Lake Champlain this summer. Looking for suggestions on where to have the mast taken down on the Hudson once we're north of NYC.

Thanks

Allan

Castleton boat club has do it yourself crane for $50, its 16 miles before troy lock. 1 518 732 7077. Not sure if they open up late april, but i hope to be there 1st week in may. Crane is DC, on batteries and charger. Not sure why it hasnt been changed to a A/C motor, would be much faster.

Jeff's yacht haven near Kingston. My hunter is currently on the hard there. I believe he charges $3 a foot of mast height to unstep only. Good people!

Re: Dismasting on the Hudson

I have used the Castleton crane several times and it is excellent. Last time I was there they charged $1/ ft of mast length, but they charged $1/ft of boat length. Very relaxed, friendly people. You might be able to find the wood to make supports for your mast 'behind the shed' there but it is better to bring your own wood since you would need a car to get somewhere to buy it.

If you don't want to do it yourself, there are several marinas with cranes eg the one mentioned.

http://www.coeymanslandingmarina.com/ is another option. Mind the seawall is recommended.

You can also use Samalot Marine at Haverstraw Marina. A bit farther South, but you will likely not be able to sail on the way to the canal anyway.

White's Hudson River Marina New Hamburg, NY (About 6 miles north of the Newburgh Beacon bridge on the east side) is a full service Marina. They can also drop the mast for you.

Re: Dismasting on the Hudson

Greetings and welcome aboard, Allan.

The Castleton Boat Club and Hop O Nose Marina both do mast stepping.

Re: Dismasting on the Hudson

I've used the Castleton Boat Club's self-service crane before, back in the days when it was hand-cranked too. The one thing you have to watch out for there is wakes--try to time it so that it isn't a weekend and have a spotter looking up and down the river for you so that you don't get a wake at a critical moment. Are you headed to a particular spot on Lake Champlain, or just cruising?

Re: Dismasting on the Hudson

Thanks for the info. This will be the first time for us taking this mast down so I'll go with one of the full service marinas.

Cheers
