Demasted Balboa 20

My forestay turnbuckle gave out and my mast twisted on the way down. The top half of my foot hinge was twisted and snapped. The mast is a 2 5/8"x4 3/4" 'Infant of Prague'. I'm looking for the cheapest way to replace it. Any ideas would be gratefully accepted?
Thanks,
Dylan

Re: Demasted Balboa 20

My first step would be E-bay (and the US specific "for sale" sites). Mast won't need to be an exact duplicate - but make sure you keep "your" mast fittings, just to make sure all is good

Not sure from your description where / what the damage is (US terminology, I think ) - but just to mention it is possible to Sleave a mast......which is basically joining two bits of mast together with an insert. Never done one but seems that the lower the join the better.

And FWIW, my boat (and her 100 odd sisterships) have sleeved masts (3 foot? above deck) - mine has been good for 40 years so far and I have not heard of any failures........

Re: Demasted Balboa 20

Thanks David. I mis-spoke... I guess I meant the step. It has a hinge and that is where it broke. The mast is straight and undamaged. The first pic shows the break/bottom of the mast. I was hoping that someone on the forum might have a matching one that I could buy off a Balboa 20 made around 1972.

Re: Demasted Balboa 20

OK, a Fabricator should be able to either fix it - or weld something new up fairly easily (and therefore cheaply!).....especially if you make a pattern up so it's a workshop job only.

Hopefully someone who actually knows about Aluminium welding! will chip in to the thread............

Re: Demasted Balboa 20

Same mount as I had on my old Ensenada 20. I never broke mine but I believe if you took the parts to a good boat fabricator it could be copied pretty cheaply. The original was cast as I remember.
