Dead battery? wonk wonk

Hey everybody. I've got a '91 Hunter 27 that wasn't used much last summer, none this past winter, and only twice this summer. Went down there last week to do some maintenance and the battery meter reads 0 when the battery switch is set to that battery only. I guess this means the battery is done for.

What could this possibly be besides the battery?

Also, I'd like to have the replacement battery with me next time I go down, but I have no idea what kind of battery to look for, other than a marine battery. I know the size and dang weight of the ones in there now but other than that I'm not sure.

What kind / amp / voltage? battery should I look for to replace it?

Thanks!

Better to take the old one off the boat and bring it to the store with you so you get credit for recycling it. It's a good deal for you and it helps to minimize the number of people who would otherwise bury them in their back yards.

Bad volt meter? Check it with a hand held meter.
If the voltage is really zero I don’t think you’ll be able to charge the battery. When you replace it, check if there is a draw on the battery when there shouldn’t be. If there is you’ll just kill the new one.

Like Gamayun said, take your old one with you when you buy the new one.

Is it a Starter battery, or used for deep cycling?

What size? Link to the model if possible.

Planning ahead before pulling it and going to a local shop will likely get you better value for money.

Do some good shopping. Do NOT buy a battery at WM, ever. Overpriced.

Find Trojan, US and American Battery distributors near you.

Flooded better value than AGM, but less of an issue if just a Starter.

It's probably the battery, but do the following to be sure:
  1. disconnect the wires from the battery and measure it directly with a voltmeter, if it's below 10 volts, it's probably bad.
  2. haul the battery to one of the good battery places already mentioned and have them test it
  3. get a new battery there. They will be able to advise on size/type/care.
