CT 38 from Taiwan ?

Does anybody know anything about the CT 38. Made in Taiwan at the Ta Chiao Bros. boat yard in 1985. It is an Alan Warwick Design.
CT is known mostly for their Traditional style designs like the CT 41 etc. I have one and its a beautiful boat (like a mini swan). I have never seen another one, in print or in person.
I would love to correspond with anyone that has or are familiar with this design.

Our previous boat was a CT 38. A great boat, very balanced, and sailed well. It is indeed "the poor man's Swan"...even looks like one. It has a modern underbody, a short, stout rig, and traditional joinery below. She handled the winds of SF bay beautifully, weighed in at 18k lbs, and was surprisingly fast. I miss her, but we needed more room for the family. We are cruising, currently in Zihuatanejo, Mexico, and leaving for the Marquesas next week. The CT would have been perfect for the 2 of us.

We have a 1979 CT 38. Bought it in 1997. We currently sail the Great Lakes. Did a major retrofit in 2004. Happy to send pics.

We purchased a new CT38 in 1983. The design was modified to place the galley and nav station forward at the mast. This opened up the beam of the boat considerably and provided a lot of living space. The galley was small but worked. I'm not sure I'd have a nav station that far forward again.
We also push the mast height up to 56' off deck, the boat easily handled the added sail area and weight. Considering that we had loaded her down for cruising she performed well.
Only three negatives. I had tuned the rig very aggressively and the mast step failed while going to weather in a chop near the Catalina Islands. I had it rebuilt with a solid mast step in Marina del Rey. Another item, TaChaio was considered to be a good yard, but quality involves more than a thick layup, it means having the right amount of the right material in the right places. The hull was not wanting in thickness and came in overweight and without a load squatted in the stern by an 1" to 1 1/2". Imagine how fast that boat could have been if it had been build to specified weight! That taught me that a really great boat builder needs to fully understand materials and sailing characteristics. But all in all I loved that boat and would own one again.
We cruised a considerable distance in her and sold it in Japan. Two things happened at that time. The crane instruments said she weighed 21000lbs totally unloaded - far over design weight. But how accurate are the indicators in cranes? Then the forward sling broke and result was a very badly damaged boat.
Alan Warwick actually came to see the boat when we were in NZ. He seemed a wonderful man and was very generous with his time.

I purchased a used CT-38 in 2009, sailed it to Maine from the Chesapeake and did a complete refit, including removal of all outside teak, new aluminum toe rail and lots more, finishing with an Awlgrip paint job on topsides and deck.. Since then the boat has been repowered with a Beta 43, added a NextGen genset, a Schaefer roller reefing boom, new sails and plenty more. Recently I registered it with PHRF New England and have a cruising rating of 180. The boat was built in 1984, but because of condition, outside and in, most think it is a new boat.
It is a very comfortable and fast cruising boat

Scanmar Marine (the windvane folks) started importing these boats in around 1983. We considered buying one, but didn't want the teak decks that were standard. When the factory wanted an extra thousand bucks to NOT put them on, we went elsewhere! But the boat had lots of nice features.

Some years later in Mexico, we met folks on one called Tegan. They cruised in the same areas we did as we wandered across the Pacific, then cruised in SE Asia for years, and now have completed their circumnavigation. They had good service from the boat, but found various faults due to lack of attention by the builders over the years, a somewhat common complaint about boats from Asia in those times.

And for Creekman: with a 180 PHRF rating, you should do very well indeed! I think something like 150 would be more realistic. Lucky you!

I have to replace the engine, and would like to hear what engine you have in your CT-38, how many HP is needed?

i know 2 formosa/ct 41 currently for sale low bux--one in michigan is 20k, one for free in oregon. so how deep do your pockets need be, as most of the boat is made by hand and none is production line?
