CSY 44 Purchase in Progress

Hi all,

I was contributing to the thread about good and bad negotiations, and thought I'd better continue in a new thread regarding my buying progress.

The boat I am purchasing, a CSY 44, was listed for $99k, which I considered too high, so I came in with a low offer. Well, the broker and seller both seemed pissed off about my offer, even though it was cash and I had warned the broker that I was going low.

Time passed and I looked at about 15 more similar boats. I kept coming back to the CSY because of its robust construction, roominess and general great overall condition. So I made another higher offer and we settled on a price we could both live with.

Yesterday I had the survey, mechanical survey, sea trial and haul out. Everything went very smoothly, with the boat running and performing perfectly. Some small items were uncovered in the survey, but they are things that I can fix.

The boat has not been hauled in 6-8 years, so I knew that it would need paint for sure. (it was cleaned regularly during that period, so the growth was not excessive). It does have quite a few small (1/2" or smaller) blisters. The surveyor told me that they are shallow and have not effected the soundness of the hull at all. I am asking for a price reduction based on the fact that when I eventually sell the boat, the prospective buyers WILL care about the blisters, and so it might affect the price.

Overall, the boat works great and is ready to head out on short trips. I have about 1 1/2 years before casting off, so I should be able to bring everything up to speed and proper condition for offshore work.

If the existing blisters are superficial why not just grind them out and fill them before you bottom paint?

excellent boat. we looked at 44's but we eventually decided on a csy 37, which we've owned the past eight years. incredibly strong boats. but one of the real selling points, to me anyway, was the accessibility factor. you can get to almost anything without moving aside something else. even better on the 44. i know you will enjoy owning her.

as to blisters, i can't remember any csy having blisters. i suggest you try to open one or two to see the extent of the problem. i once thought i had blisters but when i did a deep grinding to remove years of hard bottom paint they disappeared along with the paint....

We cruised in the company of several CSY 44s over the years. I think they are great cruising yachts. Good luck on your purchase.

I still don't know how the blister thing fits into the price. I would get the hull measured for moisture to see if it is saturated with water. If that is OK, then it would give me hope that the hull does not have a major issue.
