Cruising the from Duluth MN to NYC through the Erie Canal

I am planning a trip on my Hunter 40 from Duluth MN, through the Erie Canal, to NYC. I am planning an early August departure. Does anyone have any idea how much time I should plan to make this journey? I am also interested in any advice you may have for making this trip.

There was a post I read somewhere that the Erie route was closed due to Huricane Irene. Oh, I read it on a blog. You might want to check out the web site great loop.

We started in Lake St Clair, in September, it took us 14 days to NYC.

Despite the damage from Irene last year, they are still showing May 1st as the day to open the canal system: New York State Canals: Notices to Mariners

Re: Cruising the from Duluth MN to NYC through the Erie Canal

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, jtschetter.

We took about 6 weeks, from Thunder Bay to NYC, in (Aug - Sept) 2002. This included a week layover in Toronto, but was (otherwise) a fairly express trip.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the info. I am assuming the Oswego Canal to the Erie Canal is the best route if we are going to drop the mast.

You could check out Zero to Cruising. This couple did the canal route you are looking to do from Lake Ontario to NYC. They entered the canal at Oswego, NY.
