Crowded anchorage

Amazing how the Vallejo Yacht Club squeezes in so many boats in its marina.

It looks like grid lock. How does anyone go sailing?

I prefer something like this...

Actually, it's very protected. It's totally surrounded by a reef.

Vallejo Yacht Club is where my school had all of its sailboats. Dealt with it all the time. However I believe that picture was taken with a long lens, thus compressing the background.

Actually, it's a lot of fun. Everybody races to Vallejo on a Saturday, and they raft a zillion boats to their guest dock, several layers out. Big party Saturday night, both in the club and on the boats. On Sunday, everybody races home.

I found myself in the midst of the returning fleet Sunday afternoon. My heavy, slow motorsailor was trying out her new used spinnaker as we were going north past the Brothers and Point San Pablo. Found a wide open spot, dropped the chute, put up the jib and made for the Marin Islands and home. If we had thought about it we could have gotten some folks some excellent up close and personal photos as they flew by us. Honest, we weren't anchored.

Next year we'll have refreshments for y'all as you pass by.

It seem that it is the more experienced cruisers that will find themselves alone in the more out of the way anchorages and especially open roadsteads as in the photo.
They surely have made their share of anchoring boo boos in the past ,but now have the confidence in their technique (and ground tackle) along with a finely tuned weather eye to eschew the madding crowds . In short: they have earned it!
