cramped berths?

Just sold a Macgregor 26M which had loads of room for up to 6 people. Now have a West Wight Potter 19 which we love, since it's easier to rig & sail. However, getting into the V berth seems to be a challenge. Have seen Potter owners taller than me using the V berth. Any suggestions?

Re: cramped berths?

Welcome aboard Fortunare although I note you have been a CFer for some years - nice first post.

I have found a couple of hand holds above the bunk is often handy to manoeuvre your body into a tight berth (especially a quarter berth) and should work for a V berth.

Re: cramped berths?

This is a photo of the V Berth of a West Wight Potter 19.

Does yours look different?
If so, post a photo to illustrate.

Even better, post a photo that shows two adults in the V Berth. That may help others get a better sense of the difficulty when there are two adults in that low space.

And it would be helpful if you got a measuring tape and measured the clearance or distance from the top of the mattress to the overhead, to give us an accurate idea of the closeness or tightness of the space, especially where the sleeping person's head and torso would be. Please follow this and report your findings.

To me, the V Berth on this boat looks like a place for kids or storage, optimistically called a Berth. But I have not tried to squeeze into that space myself.

Sleeping head forward or head aft? (Head as in what's on your shoulders.) There's a whole thread on which way to sleep in the v-berth! can't recall where it is now though.

Re: cramped berths?

Take out the filler and treat it like two singles that happen to come together at the bow. Head first or feet first is up to you, whichever is more comfortable. When you are looking for a little connubial bliss, put the filler back in and just deal with it.

pirate Re: cramped berths?

Sit on the berth in the middle with back to forepeak..
Lift legs and swivel on your bum lifting legs over the berth as you go.. lean left or right depending on your chosen side and transfer weight to elbow so your now facing the hull and lift bum to shuffle it down the berth till comfortable.. usually 2 bum lifts will get you there.
The less you weigh the easier it is.. the joys of small boats few here know..
