Brilliant Zz.
$300,000 boat;
$3/hour running, $100/hr boat depreciation.
Once you've bought your ideal boat the engine running cost is insignificant.
But, for a $3,000 boat and not much income - it matters.
$3/hour running, $1/hour boat depreciation.

How many scooters can you buy when your diesel needs an overhaul?

my engine will cost about 500 to rebuild ( I'm a real scrounge about spare parts. )
the majority of the cost would be the gasket set and the new ring set.

Re: Cost per hour of running engine
I’m lucky in that the previous owner went to the trouble of calibrating the fuel gauges.
They have some sort of 1/4 1/2 etc markings but I couldn’t tell you what they are. The real markings are 200l 150l 100l 50l 25l. Two tanks, 400l.
About .9 GPH.
I know my flat water range. I can look at my SOG and gauges and estimate my current range.
Yes I know liters and gallons per hour are a bastardized set of units but aboard Moonbeam it’s always difficult to predict whether any given thing is metric or English.

lemme see - the scooter is 14 years old, the diesel is 41 years old, but i think the diesel is good for another 10-15 years. That'll probably mean i have to buy 1 new scooter before then. I'm not saying it's a stupid question, I'm just trying to give yer an answer...
FWIW well maintained old marine diesels last almost indefinitely.

Re: Cost per hour of running engine
Give a diesel 3 things and they will last forever ( or at least seem to )
1) clean water for cooling system
2) clean oil for lube system ( regular changes and oil analysis to identify possible issues )
3) clean fuel. This is the most important .
You do those three things and you will have a long and happy relationship with your engines.

so 2 sets

The other 200 is for new rod and main bearings as needed.
I do all my own shop work
