Compromises in DS vs Aft cockpit boat

We are looking to move up from a 30'er to something in the 40' range and have seen a couple of deck salon boats we like. Comparing say a Sun Odyssey 41 vs a DS42, what real performance or convenience penalties would we be paying for one or the other. Obviously the DS boats have only 1 aft cabin and the cockpit is higher, any other differences we would find out about after we bought a DS?

Thanks,

Dan and Deborah

I gather that DS means Deck Saloon. But what make & size of such a boat are you askng about, if any? And why would there be only one aft cabin vs. a "standard" boat of the same size?

ditto Uncivilized. Generally (always?) the difference between a manufacturer's DS and "standard" models are limited to the deck mold .... the hulls and interior dimensions are the same.

the two boats I cited would be a great example of the question. They are both Jeanneaus and basically the same length at 41 and 42'. It seems that the reason for the Deck Salon boats of this type is the big aft stateroom made possible by raising the cockpit. I am not sure I have seen of with twin aft cabins but they might exist. I did specify these two boats so as not to muddy the question by considering Moody's or other such boats.

Re: Compromises in DS vs Aft cockpit boat

I chose a DS over the standard model expressly for the extra height in the aft cabins. My boat has 2 cabins aft and a removable wall in the center. When removed, the aft cabin is able to accommodate a king size centerline mattress. I have left the wall in because the cabins are quite large and there is great height. I have seen that the DS model sells at a premium because they are more desirable in general. If you are interested in a used boat, do not ignore the used collection in the BVI which are a better value because they have been chartered in the past. I think a surveyor can tell you if they are used or used up. Mine after a gentle refit is ready to roll(sail).
Good luck, fair winds, following seas .
