Compass 47 Sailing Yachts - Opinions?

we are getting closer in our selection and this brand came up having aft and center cockpits still produced in SA
We are interested in the CC version

anybody experienced /knowledgable about them?

Great boat by a great designer. Sailed on an aft cockpit for years and really is high on my list of great boats!

There is a yard out here building them- one of the aft-cockpit models is in build at the moment, with a few improvements- sugar-scoop being one, and an improved interior with fewer concessions to the 80's thinking that bred the "racer-cruiser". It's now going to be a 3-cabin bluewater machine with a degree of customisation for the owner... blah-blah-blah.
Take a VERY serious look at it, and PM me if I can help you with contacts. (I'm a chandler, so I do have an interest in a way, but I sailed one for a while, and they're magnificent boats!)

As a yachtbroker I sold two AC models, loved them both! Great sailing boat and built like a brick bathroom.

If I remember correctly, the Compass 47 AC and CC and the 50 were built for the US Market by a Company in Cape Town. Bertie REED try to promote these boats in the US market. Unfortunately, 1988 1990, was difficult for sell these boat in USA. TThe Company Gulf Product run in a Bankrupcy. I bought one built, in 1988, and in 2005 I sail from Cape Town to Cannes in France. Currently the yacht is in Dry dock. We are doing a good refit, and we should sail in 2 or 3 years. I have to work for the moment as yacht Master on M/Y over 40 meters.
May be keep in touch for the future. I'm looking forward to re open a Yacht broker agency on the French Riviera.

our Sailing Yacht built in 1988 is in GRP. Yellowood inside. 50 foot, one lazarette at the stern. she did some nice cruising trip. Cape town to Rio de Janeiro and back, Cape Town to Cannes in France, (via St Helena, Ascension Island, Dakar, Canary, Madeira, Gibraltar. ) she is now in Dry dock for 1 or 2 season. we are doing a refit inside.
Next port of Call should be Balearic Island.

I own one, a nice and seaworthy cruiser, aft cockpit built 1981 in GRP. 47 foot, one lazarette at the stern. she did some nice cruising trip. Cape town via St Helena to Fortaleza , Caribes, and Med.

I realize this thread is over 10 years old but are there any Compass 47 owners still out there? I just bought one in the Chesapeake and would love to talk to an owner or pick someone's brain about updates/improvements during my refit.

Ive got one. Mine is one of the 7 originals in timber. Not sure i can help with refit and my brain has seen better days but I can assert that you won't be disappointed when she's going nicely along!

I am also looking at a Compass 47 built by Compass in South Africa, any idea after which year the hull is only GRP and no core material?


From what I gather the first 5-7 where built with wooden core but in what year was the last wooden cored boats completed...

partially the first yachts were done by different yards or as DIY in so they differ
mine is 81 by Fred Schultz SA so FiberGlass only
