Columbia 50

I am looking at a 1968 columbia 50 for sale in Washington and yes I realise it's a 40 year old boat and probably needs a ton of work but it has a low hour isuzu engine with a new shaft and wheel, Some new rigging and mostly dated but functional electronics. My question ;are these boats worthy of their reputation and worth the bother to bring them back? Does anyone out there know of any major issues other than the usual age related problems and yes I have been to the owners association website?

The Dashews did a circumnaviagation in a custom built one. From a cursory look at Yacht World, they seem to be gaining in value but I'm sure it all depends on condition. They were built hell for stout and certainly would be a good boat in a price/value/size equation. They seem to suffer from the deficiencies of CCA rule designs going to weather but also will have the comfort that those designs generated. If I was looking for a boat that massive, I'd definitely consider Col 50 especially considering the cost of a new boat of equal displacement.

i know of several 50's and all of them have completed a circumnavigation. As roverhi mentioned, they are CCA boats which brings the probability that they will be "wet" sailors and will need to be sailed heeled over more than contemporary designs to get their best performance.
