Check out this Ocean Going Machine!

Seven furlers on one boat! Just had to post a few pics of this approx. 80' aluminum staysail schooner, because it's pretty cool. I really like everything about it. Sorry about the poor quality phone camera pics, I was paddling in my kayak.

Re: Check out this Ocean going Machine!

300 views and no comment! Those masts must be 5' around at the base, I thought it was pretty cool and not the sort of rig you see every day. Perhaps this one will excite comment of some sort...

Ehen I first saw the pics I thought, I'm already too old and tired to sail the first boat.

When I get too old and tired to sail an easy boat, I'd like something like the second boat... Without the mast...

Re: Check out this Ocean going Machine!

How about some Murray Peterson schooner pics? This is the Nevada Faye. She was a family project built by Ben Harry, of Lake Union Boat Repair, and his father and uncle. She was formerly owned by a friend, recently purchased by a German pair who are going to take her to Europe. They are in the midst of refitting.

Now THAT'S my kind of Boat.

She is bite the back of your hand beautiful. If I saw her at my marina, I would end up spend the day just standing & staring.

Re: Check out this Ocean going Machine!

And while I'm posting Peterson pics, I suppose I should also post pics of the work of his famed compatriot, Aage Nielsen. This boat belongs to well-known sailmaker Frank Schattauer, of Schattauer Sails. It is truly a work of art. Sorry the pictures suck, I thought I had better ones of this boat.

Re: Check out this Ocean going Machine!

Given the number of views of this thread compared to the number of people who have actually clicked on a pic to enlarge it, I think it might be wise on my part to mention that you can click on the pics to enlarge them. Perhaps that's why no one was surprised by the schooner in the first pics rig, because most couldn't actually see it in those thumbnails.

No doubt about that, they are presently building my new suit. Hasse's only competitor quality wise IMHO.

Believe she sold for less than 20k. Of course a major refit is required, but her ancient Atlas powerplant is still good, and the hull is quite sound. My friend Mark Lehrdahl did what replanking was required, only 2 planks. I think they made a great buy.

Re: Check out this Ocean going Machine!

Hi Minaret,

I don't understand the rig on the 80' schooner. Huge masts like you'd expect on an unstayed rig, but she has shrouds and spreaders. Why?

Regards, Paul

Dunno, that's part of what I thought exceptional about it. I would describe it as "semi-unstayed", as the standing rigging is really minimal. Havfruen was the only other boat I've known with a similar rig, but she's a staysail ketch and a bit bigger.

Re: Check out this Ocean going Machine!

Just trying to imagine how much windage and roll those big honking schooner masts would contribute.
