Changing name of your sailing vessel

Question.....how many days does it usually take for you to be able to change the name of your sailing vessel? When I sign the final documents to take possession of the boat I am purchasing, and register the sailing vessel, can you put down the new name that you want at that time?

Re: Changing name of your sailing vessel

I'm shocked this didn't produce 50 answers immediately.

Are you documenting the boat or registering it through the state?

If you are documenting the vessel and doing that yourself or having an agent do it then the new name must appear on that paperwork. You can change the name the day you get the boat.
If you are registering the boat then the name has no official significance and again you can change it immediately.

State registered: change it before the ink is dry on the contract. The name has no legal significance.
CG Documented: Figure a few months. It's painfully slow.

Never mind the lamb. You need a virgin to urinate in your bilge.

Here in Canada, "Registering" your boat name is an application process. You submit the name you want and 2 alternate names in case your first choice is already taken, plus $250.

Do not change name. Very bad luck.
Virgins are reserved nowadays for Islamic martyrs. Virgin farms are all sold out.

On the bow, not in the bilge.

But only after the vessel has been sunk and raised again.

But better not to change the name at all. Don't ask me how I know!

Unless it is a name which expresses hubris, like Stupendous or Titanic, which is even worse.

At least. Changing a boat's name is bad luck without the proper ceremony.

You need get a bottle of dom perignon champagne and a virgin in a bikini to break the bottle on your bow to re christen your boat.

There was a guy who not only changed the name of his boat but then proceeded to sail off on a Friday. Needless to say, he sunk on that coming Sunday.

No,no,no: First skip the bikini, second open the bottle and pour it down the virgin, third let nature takes it course and forget about renaming the boat. That is the appropriate ceremony.
