I think those photos show what to consider when choosing an anchorage, not anchoring gear. C-link or not, your anchoring gear is going to fail in those situations. And that statement is completely ignoring the fact that those photos are in open water.

Mark
Those photos are taken from a breakwater or seawall and show the ( obviously very repeatable) effect of wave reflection off the wall.....effectively 'bouncing' back into the face of the next inbound wave.

The effect of that reflection ( not sure if thats the correct technical word or not but it will serve) in some places can be felt a not inconsiderable distance offshore.

Edited bit... you can see rocks in one...8th down.

As you say... no relevance in this debate.

Did you know that cray boats out near the edge of the 100 fathom line on the Tasmanian west coast lie to 'pot line' with home made 'mulligans' as the anchor?

Re: Can I extend my anchor chain?

Never seen a chain break! I'm sure it happens but I'm also sure its very very rare. I've seen a cheap Chinese swivel break.
I use a c-link joiner and I also added chain with a weld, shock horror! and yes I do sleep at night. My answer is you can definately extend the length of your chain, don't let these folks out you off. Listen to very experienced cruisers with a track record of sensible replys like Cate & Jim.
I wait patiently for the kind replys.

IMHO,
Yeah, it's so annoying when someone uses logic, engineering proof and multiple real world examples to state their case vs those who are negative in every post/thread they make

That was sarcasm!

Re: Can I extend my anchor chain?

Gday We extended our chain double the length with a stainless chain joiner preened it and then TIG welded all around etc.
Have used now for over a year and still looks good.
Not sure if it's the best way but sure looks good and gives us a note of mid chain now.

Re: Can I extend my anchor chain?

Popydduc,

There is no way to non-distructively test a stainless weld in a galvanized chain. Even x-ray has some risk.

Galvanized chain will stretch if the maximum safe working load is exceeded - and you will easily see the stretch when you recover your chain.

Stainless work hardens and snaps under these conditions. You will see this when you recover the stub of the chain and leave the joiner behind.

Joined chain and stainless chain are fine for day use is settled weather. If you can reasonably expect you might be exposed to ultimate conditions, at least you will always know where your ground tackle will fail.

Re: Can I extend my anchor chain?

The reason Evans joins his chain is to take several hundred pounds of weight off the bow. In Voyagers Handbook he suggests 75-100 ft of working chain with a 2-300' rope tail as the working bower. He keeps the extra chain in the bilge for storm use and shackles it between the anchor and the working chain, using the split link plus soft shackle backup. The result is like getting 3 crew out of the bow pulpit when sailing in big seas.
