Cal 43 - Views?

I am interested in any information about the Cal 43. I have been unable to find very much information on this boat on the internet. Some very basic data is at sailboatdata.com. It is designed by Bill Lapworth and had a short production run - sounds like about 14 boats from about 1970-73. It is a very pretty early IOR design. There are three listed for sale on yachtworld.com at the moment. PHRF is 102-108. Anyone have any knowledge of its history, sailing qualities, build quality, maintenance issues, etc? Thanks for any info you can provide.

Cal 43 drawings and underbody

Thanks Jake. I found a few little bits of information (and another forum to post my plea for information). I've attached a drawing and a photo of the underbody of a Cal 43. Anyone else have have any thoughts on this pretty boat?

We use to have an Islander 44, Bill Lapworth design; same vintage/designer/similar design as Cal 43. The Cals were used in a big way on the Transpac races from LA to Hawaii. We sailed our Islander from SF to Hawaii, throughout the Hawaiian Islands and all through the Pacific. We sold here here in NZ. She was a lovely, quick boat. She was slender (which made her quick) and she could point like nobody's business.

The drawbacks were: small interior space (being older and slender), tender, and we really needed to beef her up before going offshore. For example, the deck to hull fitting separated and we did the work ourselves. This was No. Fun. But we did it. Our boat also suffered alot (and I do mean alot) of blisters. We finally got the job done proper here in NZ.

Sailing performance - excellent. Cruising - worked for us but at this point I'd like something a bit roomier.

Hope this helps.

Barney Post - I'm trying to attach the scanned original brochure & owners manual for Cal 43s to this post. If it doesn't work, email me at rhondalmb@netzero.net and I'll send them to you directly.

We've not had problems with the hull/deck joint or blisters.

We've just hauled out and we DO have a "few" blisters.
Looks like it's time for a new (3rd) barrier coat. Oh well.

New to the forum, I have Hull number 7 "WindSwept" here in Coos Bay Oregon. Would love the manual and brochure if you have them, and are willing and able to send them. I just saw you email address above, so I'll contact there as well.
Thanks,

Dan
