Cal 25

We are looking to buy our first boat and are looking at a cal 25. We know it has been extremely well cared for. Our plan is to use it to get sailing experience for a year or so, and then but a bigger boat for cruising. Does anyone have any information about this kind of boat we should know? We hope to be able to sail it to Catalina and northern baja, as well as the southern california coast. I appreciate any guidence anyone might have for me!

I believe it was Robin Lee Graham's first boat, for what that's worth. Raised deck makes working forward easy.

no, little dove was a 24 flush deck.

The Cal 25 is a pocket cruiser and typical of most Lapworth boats. Beamy, stable fast, but not traditional looking. Over built. Fin keel, spade rudder.

The early 25s were flush but in 78 they came out with series 2.

The later 25 is a more typical cabin arrangement.

Aloha Sailbird,
I think the Cal 25 is a sturdy enough boat but for going along the coast and out to Catalina I'd try to find a 27 or 28, Cal, Columbia or Catalina. You'll find the larger boats to have gobs more room and a bit easier motion.
regards,
