Cabo Rico 38 - Any Opinions ?

Does anyone have an opinion on these boats before I fly 5 hours to look at it?

Plan is for coastal cruising and then take off in 2 - 3 years

This is the first boat my wife has said "I like it" based on pictures and my notes so therefore I like it

As always, the good, the bad and the ugly please

Thanks

Send a message via Yahoo to gonesail
it IS a 38 but cramped on the inside .. if you wanted live aboard. i would not buy one with teak decks.

I think the Aussie one is a Tiburon, owned by someone from Tasmania.
I saw a blog somewhere by the owner, it might be an idea to search around.
Something about compression of the deck around the Mizzen base if I recall correctly.

Nice looking boats and well built.. hold their price fairly well.. the only thing I dont like about them is the dark teak down below.. feels a bit claustrophobic after a while..

It's a Crealock design,I've never sailed one, but have often admired them.

Here's a review I found. Sailing Magazine | Cabo Rico 38-

Hi,
I have been on a cabo rico 38 and its a great little boat. Its not that small inside and it looks cosy like a little cottage. There is nothing better then being on a yacht that is build from real wood and how solid it feels. Its also a very safe and strong cruising boat. Its worth having a look to see how well build they are over the new production boats.
Have fun looking Mark

I like the Tiburon hull, I like the cockpit there a lot - very comfy in the seaway. A pity the CR 38 cockpit is not the same.

If you are looking at the one in Aruba, there's lost of work to be done to this boat. Rigging is falling apart, rusty chain-plates breaking off, engine not installed. Nice boat but cramped and slow for my taste. Solid hull trough!

nice boat, semi-custom built so you will find differences within same model, known to have rot problems in those with teak decks so check this carefully,

(1) I don't think of her as a cramped 38-footer. But there are quite a few different layouts. Gonesail, what did the layout look like on the one you thought was cramped? How many heads/cabins? Or maybe you are referring to the headroom. The headroom is below average.

(2) CR's definitely do not have dark teak interiors. The interior teak is honey colored, a special variety plantation grown in the mountains of Costa Rica. It is in fact the lightest teak I have seen - a shade lighter than the Taiwanese teak. Only way to go lighter is cured oak, glass staving, white Formica, etc.

Agreed on the teak decks.
