buying a boat

No doubt this has been said many times, but i am new here, i have recently returned from n.z. and after long discussions with a fellow friend and boat owner, i too would like advice on buying a 7 to 9 meter launch. i am a very keen fisherman too. like loads in new Zealand. so my intention is to buy and live on the boat 6 months a year in new Zealand.and wish to stay north of the north island too.so any advise on which boats to avoid would be a great help. my budget for a boat is 45000 nz dollors.but must have a toilet.
so any help will be gratefully received

G'Day Kevin, and I'll add my welcome to CF to Ann's. I'll also add, for those who don't speak Kiwi, that a "launch" means a small to medium size motor boat, usually with a deck house of some sort (ie, not an open boat).

They talk funny there!

i do have another question,
dos anyone have any idea of cost of dry storage for a launch of approx 10 meters . i am trying to get a idea of costs of having a launch.
again any help would be grat.

Just back from Kiwiland, where we have purchased a "yacht" -- a Kiwi term for anything with a sail, from an Opti to a supermaxi. Dunno about dry storage, but a 10-metre berth in Westhaven Marina will cost about $530 a month (NZD) with a live-aboard surcharge.

There's usually no need to haul out in NZ, since winter is a relatively mild event, so you can leave your boat at the dock.

And note that Westhaven is right downtown in Auckland; marinas elsewhere are cheaper.

My intention is to go north of auckland. but still not sure of dry storage as opposed to a mooring cost. and what is the advantage of a swing bridge mooring. is it secure. as i will not be in new zealand all the time.

When I was looking a year or so back, 4-pile moorings seemed like the best bet for long-term -- they were cheaper than either docks or dry storage and more secure than swing moorings.

But your mileage may vary.

A quick search found this:

Rates for Marsden Cove in Whangarei: Marsden Cove Marina - Whangarei, Northland : Rental

They don't appear to have swing or pile moorings. Opua Marina in the Bay of Islands does; for a 10-metre boat they vary in peak season from about $190 to $360, depending on heavy a block you want.

A swing mooring has the disadvantage that it's only as secure as your tackle; big storm could see you chafe through and come loose.

Opua also has a hardstand, which appears to cost about $25 a day, plus the cost of haulout and launch.

Is there such thing as a secure mooring where a launch can be left un attended for 6 months a year,in the bay of islands area. or are dry storage and or a mooring berth the only options.
