I believe a boat can be bought at 10k but this would be just the starting point. Unless one is unbelievably lucky, another 10k or so will be required to get her to seagoing standards.

In such a case, I would fly to Hi and find a fixer upper liveaboard there. You may end up with similar expense but it will save you plenty of time, stress and discomfort.

None of my business, but what's the attraction to Hawaii? Of course its a beautiful tropical paradise, but there are probably better choices if you are looking for a place to find a job and live aboard a boat in a tropical environment.
