Talk about an example of broker-speak! Here is an actual ad I just saw for a Pearson 365, along with my own interpretation of what it means...

"Engine and Genset both started immediately [when they were new, not anymore]. Rigging was complete [once, but not anymore]. Owner maintained at his house [and you can tell the work was all done by an amateur], and mechanically well above average for this boat, I would think [if I didn't know any better]."

Have you seen the boat yourself to confirm that nothing starts, the rigging is incomplete, etc?

I saw that ad but don't want to waste my time so thanks for the heads up.

I have not seen the actual advert. my reading (below in red) comes more from what is not said.....but could be just a Broker being rubbish at penning an advert. It happens .

[needs replacing]

[not been afloat in recent years - visibly a DIY finish]

[if I didn't know any better].
[above average compared to much of the other cr#p I have seen - but I could be wrong, could be worse.]

What would be worthwhile would be for several people to compare boat ads with their own inspections of a sample of boats, with at least two independent reviews for each boat. Perhaps some group like Practical Sailor could do this as an article project and a few surveyors would volunteer their time or a discount on their time.

My all time favorite is Blue Water Ready !! Boy if some of the boats we have viewed are blue water ready, I would hate to see some that were NOT ready ! LOL We have met with a buyers broker, and I will say the quality of boats we have looked at lately have been much more then we had found from Brokers adds on any of the internet sites ! but thats just my 2 cents

Wow. As if there is a difference to anyone marketing any product from a new car to whitegoods. Ford were never going to advertise the bad grip of Firestone tires they used for instance. Instead they would advertise that they minimization road noise. Marketing 101.

The "broker speak " in the posts above dont appear any different to real estate or any other big ticked marketing business.

In Aus, I have found Brokers to me mainly nonchalant, with a somewhat "buy it if you want it" attitude. On my last interaction, a mate was spending 100k on a boat, there was no bells and whistles from any of the brokers we spoke to.

OK, so it appears that brokers describing a product for sale = bad.

A totally uninformed poster(s) just making up something and ascribing it to brokers = good.

The owner of that P 365 must love the fact that you guys are trashing his boat. Guess someone trying to sell their boat = bad also?

I think I see why some of you guys get treated the way you say you do. Well deserved.

Pretty rude, blanket indictment of sales people.

I used to be a yacht broker and have worked for years trading chemicals on commission and I do not tell lies to make sales. I have a lot a friends in the business that I know do not lie. Some do tell lies, won't deal with them.

A broker I met on an appointment gave me the sales sheet for the boat and told me he knew nothing about her (interesting as the boat had been in his inventory for over a year) and I should look her over on my own. At least he stayed out of the way. What he would not do is answer direct questions with specific answers. He evaded saying or stating anything at all that had to do with the boat. "How many horsepower is the genset?" I asked after looking at the sales sheet and then the genset itself"I am not sure." was his response. The specs did have the number, he would not say it.
