Boats with Shallow Draft for Florida, Bahamas, Chesapeake

PURPOSE:
The purpose of the thread is to illustrate the boats designed for shallow water cruising and to show photos and some data about them, including their draft and typical "street price" or Asking Price.

Owner comments about the boats are encouraged and any observations about their distinctive features or comfort or reputations or build is encouraged too. I will continue to add to this thread as I identify boats that fit the criteria listed below. This thread can contain both Mono and Multi-hull boats, but I will post it in the Monohull forum as that is where most people will be looking for shallow draft boats.

This is NOT a thread about whether a shallow draft boat is required (there are many threads discussing that in the archives). This is an illustrative thread of the types of boats designed for shallow water cruising.

REASON:
I am starting this thread because over the years I have been a member of CF I see many new members asking very similar questions about boats suitable for use in Florida, the Florida Keys, and the Bahamas. One common factor is that these are all cruising areas where a shallow draft boat may be preferred because of the local conditions (shallow water, "skinny water" cruising grounds). While boats with drafts deeper than 6 feet do cruise those areas, it is a fact that a shallow draft boat will allow its owner to get closer in at anchorages and to travel through some areas others cannot safely transit due to their deeper draft.
________________

What is "shallow draft?"
For the purpose of this thread, I will say it is a boat that has a draft of LESS THAN SIX FEET.

BOAT CRITERIA FOR THIS THREAD
1. Shallow Draft. (Less than 6' draft)
2. Suitable for Coastal Cruising for a Couple
3. Suitable for cruising to or in the areas of SW Florida, Florida Keys, Bahamas, (and other shallow water areas such as the Chesapeake)

ASKING PRICE:
As I think that one of the most important things to point out for anyone looking to purchase a boat is the ASKING PRICE they are able to start with (their maximum budget for an asking price), I will include the ASKING PRICE of the boats I find. This is a starting point to understanding how much these boats may cost to purchase. Of course some may be lower, some higher, and the buyer may be able to negotiate a better deal. But, for new members or new sailors who want an idea of what it may cost to purchase one, this is important to know. The asking price I post will be from a current or recent sale listing so we know it is realistic. Just remember, the actual condition of the boat is most important.

PHOTOS:
Pictures are worth a thousand words. New sailors are not familiar with older boats. So I think it is helpful to post at least one photo of a boat to show the overal design. I will post one or more photos of the type of boats I find, usually from a sale listing.

Please Note!
I am NOT selling these boats and I do NOT get a commission. I am simply posting a link so others may see more photos and get more details of the type of boats discussed. Some links may be to archived photos, some may be to current listings. As with any boats I post here on CF, I encourage everyone to do their own research and use a surveyor prior to purchase. Caveat Emptor!
_______

You can add boats and your observations or opinions here too!
I invite everyone to post boats that fit the "Shallow Draft" category in this thread. When posting, please include a photo of that type of boat AND the draft of the boat, at a minimum. If you have experience on that kind of boat, please include your own observations or opinion of how comfortable it was to sail or use. If you know of any particular problems with the design or build, note them too.

If you have a link to a current sale listing, post that, but please post photo(s) and a brief description of the type of boat (with draft) at a minimum, so this thread contains more than just links.

Old sale listing links can die, so posting the data and photos in this thread is much better than just a link alone.

Remember, the purpose of the thread is to ILLUSTRATE the boats designed for shallow water cruising and to share photos and data and opinions about them.
____________

I sincerely hope this thread helps connect people to a suitable boat for their own adventures!

Pearson 35 Centerboard 1980

Today's Noteworthy Find!

TYPE:
1980 Pearson 35 Centerboard

Location: Key Largo Florida
Asking Price = $18,000

What makes this noteworthy, in my opinion?

1. Condition!
After looking at thousands of boats of this era, this boat stands out (in the listing photos) as appearing in outstanding condition. Of course you will have to see the boat for yourself and have a survey done to truly assess condition, and photos can be misleading, but based on what is shown in the photos, I think this boat looks outstanding at this price point.

If I were looking for a "Keys and Bahamas" cruiser at low asking price, this would be a boat to look at asap.

2. Florida and Bahamas design considerations:
A. Shallow draft with centerboard (min draft only 3'9")
B. Bimini and Dodger Canvas
C. 100 Gallon water tank
D. Wind generator

Other points to notice:
Adler/Barbour Refrig
Roller Furling Jib
Dripless shaft
Freshwater cooled Universal Diesel
H/C water and Shower
Shower on deck
Lewmar 44ST winches
Double anchor rollers

More details and more photos at the listing itself:
1980 Pearson 35 Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com

________

More Data on this type of boat:
From 1968-1982 the PEARSON 35 remained relatively unchanged and had the longest production run of any other Pearson model.
Diesel power available as an option as was a yawl rig.
A number of different power plants were used including Farymann, Westerbeke, and Yanmar.
Not the same as a much later PEARSON 35 (1997?) which is very similar to the PEARSON 34-2 and of which few were built.

Re: Boats with Shallow Draft for Florida, Bahamas, Chesapeake

Good thread and looking forward to the replies. We are looking for a shallow draft (non-CB) cruiser in the 35-40ft range to sail the Keys/Bahamas and to eventually live aboard.

We were set on an IP35 and have looked at 5 or 6 from FL to Maryland. But swimming and scuba off it looks like it would be a nightmare with the helm seat and pedestal set up. So the search continues.

Yeah, ok, now for a more serious reply... folks should be looking at the classic S&S designed Tartans and Morgan designed Columbias and Morgans with CBs, pretty hard to really be shoal draft without a CB and 35 to 40 or more feet.

Re: Boats with Shallow Draft for Florida, Bahamas, Chesapeake

I started this thread with a posting of a recent listing for a Pearson 35 (1980).

I just saw a new listing (October 20 2016) for another Pearson 35 (1969) that is about the same price ($18K) and also looks to be in VERY nice condition and with recent upgrades. When viewing the online photos I was struck by how CLEAN the interior and engine space appears. Very clean engine area. (It is an Atomic 4 in this boat.). The exterior photos show the hull design nicely so I will post those here too. Nice looking boat! Well kept. Note that this boat comes with LOTS of stuff, many sails, and newer electronics and all the boat goodies (small stuff).

If budget allows - Sirius makes some nice shallow draft crusiers, holds value well - fortunately/unfortunately.

Very interesting design but they appear to be non-existent in North America. I have also researched the Hanse 370 and that looks perfect but also very rare on the used market in the U.S.

calibers are great bahamas boats. Used to have a 33 which has a 4'6" draft - sold it last year for 45k. Now have a caliber 40 with a 5' draft. Both great boats for a couple with occasional visitors. Great ventilation and go to windward far better than IP's do.

I believe that is the same hull mold used for the Swan someone was trying to identify on another thread. I wonder what S&S would have thought about that hull in a shoal drafted model?
edit: my bad, not the Swan, the Yankee 38. Still, S&S didn't design it to be shoal drafted...
