Re: Boats with Shallow Draft for Florida, Bahamas, Chesapeake

Romarine Cat Ketch
___________________________

Steady's Notes

The photos of the boat show an interesting looking boat, a cat ketch rig with Free Standing Masts, in what appears to be good condition inside, considering the age and asking price. The asking price is low, and is likely a factor of this being a more unusual or uncommon boat, size, age, rig, etc.

The ad says it has a Diesel engine with 600 hours (one ad says that).

As with any boat, a survey is a good idea. As with any boat, Caveat Emptor.

I like what I see in some of the photos, though I think the broker has done a poor job of showing the boat, and some photos are very poor (no good photos of the boat profile, etc.). There are more photos showing the interior and cockpit and details on the linked page.

There is no indication of the mast material (aluminum? Fiberglass? Wood?).
The designer's name is on the ad.

Ad says:
"Spacious cabin with 6'5" head room and sleeps two comfortably. Twin keel design offers very shallow draft 4' draft."

I like what I see in the photos for this age and asking price.

Most importantly, several key items have been updated within the last 20 years, including the Engine, Mast, Rigging, Fuel Tank, Batteries, and less importantly, cushions.

There are more photos showing the interior and cockpit and details on the linked page.

Ad says:
"She had a new 30-HP Yanmar 3YM30 installed in 2004, new fuel tank in 2006, new interior cushions in 2007, new mast and rigging in 1998 and 2 new gel batteries in 2013. She comes with a mainsail and a 150 furling Genoa. Great for sailing in those skinny waters as she only draws 4-feet with the centerboard up."

I sailed in tandem with one of these back in 1971 from Great Inauga to Monte Christie DR in 1971 upwind in big seas. The foredeck developed a 4ft long leaky crack. oh well we still made it!

Re: Boats with Shallow Draft for Florida, Bahamas, Chesapeake

Just curious, is there a reason no one ever posts any of the modern production boats in here? Is it just "assumed" everyone knows which of those work best for this type of cruising?

I believe it's due to the fact that there are so few shallow draft sailboats being designed and built. There are few notable European designs of centerboard and lifting keel boats and in the US the scarcity continues. With Seguin and Hobie among the few here. In years past, every large body of shallow water in the US had their own local designs and builders. Skipjacks, sharpies and bugeyes were all quite well known and used every day for commerce and pleasure.

Very good answer.
Thanks for adding your comment to this discussion thread.
______________

As is shown in this thread, there are some relatively shallow draft boats (less than 6' was my call) available on the market, but as pointed out, they may be older designs, or intended for local conditions and possibly for protected waters (bays, etc.).

I like what I see in the photos. There are more photos showing the interior and cockpit and details on the linked page.

The interior of the boat appears very clean, and compared to most boats of this age and asking price, it appears very good (interior condition).

This model's head compartment has a small separate shower stall (with seat).

Take note that this boat has a shortened rig (described below) (less than 50').

Ad indicates this boat has a 27 hp Yanmar Diesel (1984)
Yanmar diesel model 3HMF 27hp
Fresh water cooled
Upgraded alternator
Racor fuel filter
Sea strainer

Ad equipment list says: "16000 BTU Cruisair reverse cycle marine air and heat"

Ad says:
"Her interior has been upgraded with new port lights throughout, reupholstered cushions, newer galley faucet and shower head. The rig has been slightly shortened to allow her to manage under all 50 ft bridges. An upgraded aluminum fuel tank has been added, as well as the running rigging."

Saw this interesting boat today online.

Adding it here because it is still in a "Like New" condition and it has a Lifting Keel with minimum draft of only 4 feet.

My Disclaimers and Requests

I have no financial or other connection to this boat or the seller.
I have not seen this boat in person, nor have I sailed on it.
As with any boat, it is a good idea to research the design to learn about how they sail, common problems and owner opinions.
As with any boat, it is smart to have a qualified yacht surveyor perform a survey of the boat to assess its condition.
I am posting this to help others find boats. This one caught my eye, and I hope this thread helps others find a good fit for them.
I hope this thread proves helpful to CF Members. If so, let me know, as it is nice to know the time spent on it has helped others.
IF you purchase this boat, let me know (a PM would be OK).
IF you purchase this boat, I would enjoy seeing it, or going for a sail on it, if I am ever in your area.
IF you have a sister boat, I encourage you to post some comments about it in this thread.
IF you own a similar or sister boat, I would enjoy sailing on it with you, because I enjoy sailing on a wide variety of boats and would like to get some time on many designs, including this one.

Steadman's Notes

This particular design is one of my favorites. Very roomy inside. Nice flush deck. Nice cockpit. Easy rig. I almost bought one years ago, and they still catch my eye.

Unfortunately this seller has only one photo of the boat on the ad.

But, I do like to see this model of boat (and any boat) sailing under full sail.

Everything I have seen has the draft of this model at 6'6" or somewhere close. I think this listing has a typo.

Good Ketch. (sic)

You are right. Thanks for catching the error.

I copied what was on the sale ad. And the ad does say 4'6" (so it is likely a typo or mistake by the owner).

I have now looked a few more ads and on Sailboatdata.com and see the common draft listed is 6 feet (6').

Unfortunately it is too late for me to edit my post up above to correct it.

Sorry about the inaccuracy.

Re: Boats with Shallow Draft for Florida, Bahamas, Chesapeake

I am a yacht designer specializing in shoal draft cruising boats, both sail and power, as well as all manner of small craft. I am a life-long live aboard cruising sailor, and PEREGRINE is my seventh personal cruising sailboat. She is a 53' LOD ketch, with a draft of 3-feet board up and 7' 6' board down. She is less than two years old. I have sailed her from Florida to Maine and back twice--mostly single-handed--and I cruised the Bahamas in her in spring of 2020, during the Corona virus pandemic. We were the last boat to enter the country before the borders were closed. Needless to say, we had a somewhat dysfunctional cruise, but still managed to visit many favorite spots in our five weeks there.

PEREGRINE is my seventh personal cruising sailboat, and my fifth extreme shoal draft sailboat. Consequently I feel I know many places to go, throughout the US east coast, Bahamas, and Florida Keys, which are only accessible with shoal draft. I wrote an article about Cruising the Bights of Andros, for example.
