Re: Boats with Shallow Draft for Florida, Bahamas, Chesapeake

Kenner Privateer 35

Asking Price = $15,000
(Health forces sale)

Location = Bahamas

Year = 1972

________________

Steady's Brief Notes

Call me old school, but I do like the traditional styled boats with graceful lines as shown in the Privateer models (there is more than one length).

The ad for this boat indicates some updated gear and says the engine has 500 hours on it since rebuild.

Be aware that while this is a "35" foot boat, the long bowsprit makes it really 41' LOA.

FISHER 25 MS sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com
we downgraded from Westsail-32 to a Fisher 25 MS. She is equally sturdy and well built. Surprisingly roomy for her size. comfortable for 2 people to cruise. In 10-12 kn of breeze she sails at about 2.5-3.0 Kn. :-)

Re: Boats with Shallow Draft for Florida, Bahamas, Chesapeake

The description and the drawing are very different, the drawing is a full keel not a fin keel, the rudder is keel hung not skeg hung. Myself I would prefer that the full keel with encapsulated ballast rather than ballast hung with bolts, the externally ballast is always a maintenance issue.

There are very few boats of this size that I consider to be suitable for long range cruising and this is one of them.

you are right @Scout30. She can cruise long distance or cross oceans. We sailed her up to outer Hebrides. She did well. And being honest here, we don't feel claustrophobic. we spend all our time in the saloon because of the cold and rain in Scotland. She is spacious.
the cockpit is roomier than Fisher30. We have a nice Burgundy coloured awning but not enough sun and warmth :-D

Re: Boats with Shallow Draft for Florida, Bahamas, Chesapeake

Ta Chiao CT 35 Ketch

Year = 1980
Location = Deltaville Virginia
Asking Price = $24.999
___________________________

Steady's Notes

The photos of the boat show a nice looking boat, in what appears to be good condition. As with any boat, a survey is a good idea. Caveat Emptor.

I like what I see in the photos. There are more photos showing the interior and cockpit and details on the linked page.

This is a full keel, traditional styled boat.
It has teak decks.

From what is shown in the photos, it appears to be in a very good condition, or well kept, compared to most other boats this age. The interior looks nice, engine looks clean.

Notice the list of gear down below. Several popular items cruisers typically add to a boat are already there, and I have bolded them below.

Re: Boats with Shallow Draft for Florida, Bahamas, Chesapeake

Freedom 40 CB Cat Ketch

Year = 1980

Asking Price = $59,900

Location = Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin, USA
____________

Steady's Notes

I once considered buying one of these (back in the 1980s) when it was priced about $140K as I recall.

When I boarded the boat I was struck by the unusual Free Standing Masts, the unusual Flush Deck design, and the very roomy interior with nice interior finish, and the simple sail handing controls in the cockpit. I was impressed then, and still am.

The layout is different from most boats, and while it is an unusual design, I like the look of it and the "feel" of the boat when on it. The flush deck, keyhole bulkhead, overhead hatches, and topsides portlights make the interior seem spacious and light. I like it.

Notice in these photos the way the dinghy is carried on the Flush Deck.

Notice the shallow draft. I think this would be a nice boat for cruising the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, and the ICW to the Chesapeake (for gunkholing).

NOTE! One of the photos below shows a secondary ladder in the saloon. That is NOT the primary ladder to the cockpit, which is further aft.

If any CF Member owns one of these boats, I will volunteer as crew in order to get some time on one. I would enjoy seeing how it sails.

Re: Boats with Shallow Draft for Florida, Bahamas, Chesapeake

There are many drool worthy boats in this thread, but this message is for somebody looking for a good, shallow draft boat who, like me, has more passion than money. Last year, I acquired a 1970 Morgan 30. For over 20 years I sailing Favona, a 32’ Robert Clark designed Fastnet winner. As you might imagine she was a joy to sail and I was afraid that, having sailed her, all other boats would pale in comparison. As it turns out, my son, who grew up sailing Favona, and I become more impressed with the Morgan every time we take her out.

So my recommendation is, if your interest is big but your bank account is small, a first model Morgan 30 could be just what the doctor ordered.

Re: Boats with Shallow Draft for Florida, Bahamas, Chesapeake

Mariner 31
___________________________

Steady's Notes

The photos of the boat show a very nice looking boat, that appears exemplary for this model. This boat was owned by a CF Member and previously advertised in the CF Boats for Sale classifieds section. Asking Price at that time was $20K.

The photos show the love and care and very nice refit done by the previous owner (details I viewed on his blog). While this particular boat has sold recently, I think this is such a good example that it may help someone looking for a similar boat in the future.

I am sharing it here because this model of boat fits this thread's concept and because the Mariner boats are occasionally seen for sale.

I will let the photos speak for themselves. Photos used with permission of the owner (CF Member).

I like what I see in the photos.

Sailboat Data says:
"The MARINER 31 was the first fiberglass hull built by Far East Yachts. The decks and cabintrunk were of plywood covered with fiberglass.
Similar to MARINER 32 and FUJI 32."

My Disclaimers and Requests

I have no financial or other connection to this boat or the seller.
I have not seen this boat in person, nor have I sailed on it.
As with any boat, it is a good idea to research the design to learn about how they sail, common problems and owner opinions.
As with any boat, it is smart to have a qualified yacht surveyor perform a survey of the boat to assess its condition.
I am posting this to help others find boats. This one caught my eye, and I hope this thread helps others find a good fit for them.
I hope this thread proves helpful to CF Members. If so, let me know, as it is nice to know the time spent on it has helped others.
IF you purchase this boat, let me know (a PM would be OK).
IF you purchase this boat, I would enjoy seeing it, or going for a sail on it, if I am ever in your area. Or, if you own a similar or sister boat send me a PM. I enjoy sailing on a wide variety of boats and would like to get some time on many designs, including this one.

Re: Boats with Shallow Draft for Florida, Bahamas, Chesapeake

Willard 8 Ton World Cruiser
___________________________

Steady's Notes

This William Crealock designed double ender will likely appeal to a cruiser looking for a smaller "blue water boat" styled on more traditional (1970s concepts) lines. Crealock placed emphasis on seaworthy safety over speed.

Noteworthy are:
1. Double ended hull design, 30 feet LOD
2. Full keel, cast iron.
3. Bowsprit (about 5'), adds to marina expense.
4. Heavier displacement (may be a slow boat).
5. Shallow Draft = 4' 8"
6. Good Headroom = 6' 4"
7. Designed as a Cutter Rig
8. Reported as "heavy fiberglass hull"
9. The name includes the words "8 Ton" and that is explained below in comments by an owner.
10. May be rather slow (est. 5-6 knots), see the SA/D. One owner reported he never saw 8 knots, which is not surprising.

The photos of the boat I saw (linked below) show a nice looking boat, in what appears to be good condition. As with any boat, a survey is a good idea. Caveat Emptor.

I like what I see in the photos. There are more photos showing the interior and cockpit and details on the linked page.

Comments by one owner.

“Taller guests are surprised by the 6′ 4″ standing headroom inside. The keel is bolted and glassed in protecting your running gear. The romantically named “8-Ton” refers to the storage capacity rather than the actual weight of the vessel. Its displacement is 17,000 lbs. including 6,500 lbs. of ballast in the keel.”

Re: Boats with Shallow Draft for Florida, Bahamas, Chesapeake

Bristol 32
___________________________

Steady's Notes

I like what I see in the photos. There are more photos showing the interior and cockpit and details on the linked page.

This boat appears to be an outstanding example of a well maintained boat at a very low price.

The photos show a boat in very nice condition (especially considering the age). Someone has done a very good job of maintaining or updating this boat. It looks very nice and clean.

The Bristol brand is well respected among sailors in the USA, as they produced many nice cruising boats, with 322 units of the Bristol 32 built.

I am favorably impressed by the number of updates and relatively recent Yanmar Diesel engine (2003) that replaced an original Atomic 4 Gasoline engine, and the long list of things already done (recently) that I would want done if buying an old boat. I have bolded some of the especially noteworthy items below.

Steady's POV on Value in Low Priced Used Boats

What strikes me when I see a boat like this is that so many of CF's new members are saying they have the dream to own a cruising boat, may have very little to zero cruising experience, and they want a "great deal" or "have very little money." I understand that desire, and the financial constraints that may make them look for something that is cheap or priced very low, so they can "fix it up."

Unfortunately, I think some are looking at boats that are essentially hulks, bare hulls, salvaged boats, sunken boats, damaged boats, or long neglected derelicts, simply because they are priced so low (e.g. Some $10k or possibly less, sometimes "free."). In my view, those can become extremely expensive boats when one considers the amount of time, labor, and materials (or gear) that will have to be spent to get them in good, seaworthy condition ready for cruising. In my view, most of those boats are what is known as "false economy."

In comparison, when one looks at the long list of equipment and recent updates (engine, sail, etc.) shown on this boat, it is a example of how much value can be found in an "well maintained, excellent condition" boat, compared to a derelict boat that may need a new Diesel engine, new exhaust, new sails, new rigging, new mast, extensive interior work, new cushions, new canvas, new electronics, new bottom paint, etc.

Consider how much all of those things (I bolded below) would cost to SOURCE, PURCHASE and then INSTALL on a hulk/derelict boat that may be lower priced but does not have these items. Add them up, then compare that to the asking price of the boat below. I think the economic decision is easy.

As I have said before, I share boats like these here because I want to see more people enjoying sailing. Finding a good, seaworthy boat is the first big risky step for many, and one that can seem overwhelming to newbies who are not sure what to look for or what is a "good deal."

I hope this thread continues to help others, long after this or any particular boat shown here is sold.

Here is an excerpt of the ad's description:
"• 1975 Bristol Centerboard Sloop, designed by Ted Hood, and built in Bristol, Rhode Island. She turns heads at the dock, and sails beautifully. Her shoal-draft keel draws 3'7" with the centerboard up - great for Florida waters. And the ST4000+ autopilot makes her easy to single-hand.
Motor is a 2003, 3-cylinder, 30 hp Yanmar 3GM30F Diesel (I believe the original was an 18 hp Universal. So the 30 hp motor really gets her through strong currents and wind.) I've kept a maintenance log since I bought the boat in 2014, and have performed regular engine maintenance. Starts right up, no smoke, runs strong!
2014: new Garhauer mainsheet traveler; new bimini over cockpit.
2015: new exhaust elbow; new head pump & check valves; new mainsail cover (Mack Pack) and Lazy Jacks; new VHF radio.
• 2016: completely stripped, caulked, and varnished toe rail, coaming boards, hand rails.
2017: boat hauled: bottom job with 2 coats of Trinidad; new scupper through-hulls; stanchions, chain plates, and block tracks rebedded; new LED bow nav-lights; seacocks lubricated; hull waxed; new cutlass bearing and prop zinc; jib reconditioned & new luff tape; new furling line.
Also 2017: new mainsail; new LED spreader lights, new batteries; new battery charger, new raw water pump, new auto pilot drive unit.
2 GPS chartplotters, new VHF radio, Dual AM/FM/CD player with salon and cockpit speakers, (SAT ready Pioneer DEH-P5900IB CD receiver - not installed), alcohol marine stove, ST40 depth sounder, ST4000+ auto pilot, 2 Barient 22-39 self-tailing 2-speed primary winches, electric windlass, roller furling genny, jiffy reefing mainsail from cockpit, lazy jacks, Mack Pack quick-zip sail cover, Racor primary fuel filter.

Asking $19,500 or best offer"
