Re: Boats with Shallow Draft for Florida, Bahamas, Chesapeake

There is a wise saying about sailboats:

"It is not the age of the boat that matters most, it is the condition that matters most."

Keeping in mind that wisdom, when I am looking at boats I look for style, design, asking price, location, features, and most important of all, condition.

You Know that it is easy to see older boats that are neglected and have deferred maintenance. The smart boat shopper will look for a boat in very good condition, and will be willing to pay more than average for that boat, because a boat in very good to excellent maintenance condition, regardless of age, is one that is very likely going to cost less to own in the long run.

Here is a boat that appears to fit the description of "Well Maintained."

I saw this boat and was impressed by the condition shown in the photos. It looks outstanding, and so I am including it here in this thread about Outstanding Boats.

Aside from condition, this is also a boat that will likely please many sailors who may be looking for a comfortable boat for coastal cruising and possibly live-aboard. The interior of this boat looks especially nice, and with the large deadlights (windows) in the cabin, it offers lots of light and views.

But, there is more to it than just pretty cushions and nicely maintained teak wood interior. I was also struck by the clean and orderly anchor locker and the hidden systems areas too. Very nicely kept and exceptionally clean. That is a good sign. To see what I mean, go see the photos on the sale listing. There are several that show how well kept this boat appears to be. I will post just a few below, but there are more on the listing.

Re: Boats with Shallow Draft for Florida, Bahamas, Chesapeake

1999 St. Valery-Devlin/Bolger Sharpie

Belle was built in 1999 at the renowned boatyard of Devlin Designing Boat Builders (devlinboats.com) to the design of the late Phil Bolger for a knowledgeable owner who fell in love with the design. According to Sam Devlin, to build this boat again at his yard would cost well over $120,000!

Phil Bolger was renowned for his Sharpie designs, and Belle, to the best of our knowledge, was the only Bolger designed St. Valery Schooner that was ever built. As is typical with Sharpies, Belle is shoal draft and water ballasted. This makes her a very practical boat to explore the Puget Sound and anywhere else where you might encounter shoal waters or tidal areas. Also, it's makes her a very easy boat to trailer to distant locations or store during our long winters. The epoxy/wood composite construction (stitch and glue) gives Belle the beauty and charm of a wooden boat with the durability and low maintenance of fiberglass. Truly the best of both worlds.

The lug rig makes her a delightful boat to sail and the 10 hp Honda engine moves her along like a little trawler. She sleeps four (two comfortably) and makes a cozy little retreat when the weather turns cooler. With kerosene lamps and an almost new Wallas heater/stove, she is comfortable below in any weather.

The current owners have cruised her for almost ten years now throughout the Puget Sound and Southern California, where they have cruised extensively in the Channel Islands and down to San Diego where they kept her for several years.

Alas, having loved her for ten years, the current owners have moved up to a much larger boat in the Caribbean and have decided to sell her. She has been meticulously mantained at the Devlin yard and is truly both an extremely practical fun little cruiser and a work of art.

Re: Boats with Shallow Draft for Florida, Bahamas, Chesapeake

Endeavour 37 "B" Plan

1980 sloop
"B Plan" is a traditional layout with quarter berth.

Asking Price = $29,900
Location = St. Augustine FL

http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1980...w#.WDgbz7ROKhD
________________

Steady's Notes

The Endeavour 37 is a boat I would like for a comfortable shallow draft cruiser for Florida or coastal cruising. It is relatively roomy and would make a nice liveaboard boat.

Is it a "Blue Water Boat?"
That is debatable. But, I have sailed 2,500 miles from Hawaii to California on an Endeavour 37 (A Plan) and found it to be comfortable sailing with a nice interior and a very large cockpit, with long flat cockpit seats on which you could sleep. Despite sailing in a gale on that voyage, I never felt unsafe in the boat. If asked to take a similar voyage on a similar boat (that is well prepped for long distance voyaging) I would go again.

One feature I like on the Endeavour 37 is the multiple (10!) opening portlights and three deck hatches, which are there to give good ventilation such as in Florida and Caribbean (for which this boat was designed). I think this is an important feature for hot weather cruising locations. Not many cruisers of this size have as many opening portlights.

The galley is better than on some boats. There is a full size nav table. The head is nice size. The Endeavours typically had teak parquet floor or sole panels.

Noteworthy on the Endeavour boats is the extensive use of teak wood in the interior. It is better than on many other boats of this age.
_____________

Condition of This Boat?

I have looked at many Endeavour 37 boats online, and this one appears to be in much better than average condition (from the photos). It looks clean and well kept. The interior and exterior appears to be in very good condition compared to others of this age. As with any online sale listing, we can only see what is shown in the photos, so, Buyer Beware always applies. But, after looking at so many of this particular model and similar age, I think this one looks very good.

Re: Boats with Shallow Draft for Florida, Bahamas, Chesapeake

Blue Moon Yawl 24' WOOD

Tom Gilmer design.

Here is a link to a cute pocket cruiser (24') I just profiled in a sister thread (Outstanding Boats) here on CF. There is much more information and more photos via the link below.

As a "pocket cruiser" it does have some limitations due to size. There is no standing headroom. There is no enclosed head. The berths and interior are relatively spartan. But, for some sailors (lovers of wood boats, trailer sailors, lovers of gaff rigged boats, lovers of simplicity) this boat may be appealing and offer something not found in more common production plastic boats.

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ml#post2265499

Shallow Draft: This boat has a 4' draft and LOA 24 feet.
Asking Price = $5,000 firm.

It is a wood boat, and that does cause some need for special care and maintenance. But, it is a wood boat, and that offers a wood boat lover something priceless too.

Take a look! I think it looks Outstanding.

Steady's Notes:

If any CF member has a Kadey Krogen 38, I would very much like to go for a sail on one. Why? It is a boat I admire. Please let me know via a PM and as I am traveling the USA ports in 2017 looking at boats, I may be in your area. I am not in the market to buy one this year, but I would like to sail on one, if you need crew or for a day sail.

The Kadey Krogen 38 Cutter is a boat I have admired for several reasons:

Shallow Draft with Dual Centerboards (minimum draft = 3' 2")

Flush Deck (or Raised Deck)
Design for maximum headroom inside saloon, and a nice deck for storing a hard dinghy or nesting dinghy (my preference).

Traditional styling (Decorative details such as trailboards on the bow, a bowsprit, etc.)

Large Cockpit and large Lazarette lockers for storing cruising gear.

Unusual interior layout with athwartship double in aft stateroom, nice for living on the hook.

Traditional styling in the interior, with wood and a comfortable looking salon and galley.

This design was admired by Robert Perry, a naval architect whose own designs have a wide following and whose judgement many respect. I don't always agree with his views, but I found his remarks about this boat design particularly interesting (see below).

NOTE: As in earlier posts, I am posting a mix of photos from a mix of boats to illustrate this model. There may be differences in boats from one year to another. The photos I post are to be used to get a general idea of the boat model and type. As with all boat buying: Caveat Emptor!

Robert Perry Review of the Kadey Krogen 38
http://www.kadeykrogen.com/articles/...ftingtable.htm

"There is nothing better than a flush deck to set off a handsome hull."
"This is a very interesting design"

"James S. Krogen designed this yacht for himself and is presently having it built in Taiwan. Those of you who have followed yacht design over the years will be well acquainted with the work of Mr. Krogen. His designs have always been amongst my favorites."

"If this design did not have tandem centerboards I might worry about weather helm, but the boards will take care of that. The sail area to displacement ratio is generous at 17.5, indicating to me that Mr. Krogen likes to sail fast. The low aspect ratio configuration of this rig will make it quick on a reach, the one point of sail where the staysail can really do some work. The benefit of this rather large rig is that it will enable the boat to move well in light air without the need for genoas bigger than 130 percent. "

This has always been one of my favorite LFH designs. There have been a bunch of these built over the years & if faithful to the original design they are beautiful seaworthy boats.

Asking Price = $13,500

_______________

Steady's Notes:
This particular boat caught my eye because it is a pilothouse motorsailor I had not seen before. It has a nice inside steering position. While I don't know more about this boat, it does seem to resemble or probably was designed to compete with somewhat similar Southerly boat about the same size. I happen to like a pilothouse boat, and consider an inside steering position to be a plus for a boat, especially if one intends to use the boat in cold water locations (e.g. PNW).

As I have written before: I have NO financial connection to this seller. I am simply sharing this info on a boat I find interesting that may appeal to CF Members who are looking for a boat in this price range (Less than $30K).

50' Twin Keel Monohull

You might ask, how could I introduce a monohull description with a multihull symbol? Well, my monohull had twin keels. While I was working on the original aft-rig concept, I was also intrigued with the idea of homogenizing Bruce King's very successful twin daggerboard, SORC race boat design with the British twin keel cruising boat concepts. The 50' world cruiser,"Bluebird of Thorne", became my base model. I drew up my idea of a real blue water cruising monohull which made use of my mast-aft sailing rig. The twin keels offered the similar shallow draft exploration features of the multihulls, and the vessel could be beached in remote areas for cleaning the bottom and/or work on the prop, rudder, thru-hulls, etc.
